Grand Seiko Hi-Beat SLGH005 White Birch Calibre 9SA5 - Review, Price
The presentation in early 2020 of the Grand Seiko “White Birch” or “Shirakaba” already gave us a great impression and it clearly was one of the watches I was eager to see in the metal. There’s no turning around, this SLGH005 represents the best of what GS can do for its permanent, classic collection. Mechanical noblesse, slightly renewed design language merged with respect of the brand’s traditions, exquisite finishing and a dial that is out of this world. And having this piece with us at the office for a review only confirmed what we imagined. So let’s have a closer look at this new Grand Seiko Hi-Beat SLGH005 White Birch.BackgroundThis SLGH005 is a new reference in the brand’s collection but isn’t entirely a novelty. It is built on existing foundations, which were introduced in the context of Grand Seiko’s 60th-anniversary, celebrated back in March 2020. What this SLGH005 is the first model in the permanent collection to be
Introducing: The Monochromatic Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Essential Grey
We’ve been raving on and on about the profound use of colour within the watchmaking industry these past couple of months (and years). And yes, there have been countless vibrant, expressive and often quite cool and colourful watches, but what if you’re in the market for something a little less bright and eye-popping? What if you’re looking for something more, let’s say, monochromatic but still want it fit for summer? You’re in luck, as Hublot has just presented a lightweight titanium version of its Spirit of Big Bang in toned-down full-grey attire. This is the new and limited Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Essential Grey.Hublot’s watches are never shy of showing off what they are, as more often than not, the brand likes to play around with colours, textures and materials. A case in point is the recent Nespresso, Sky Blue and Texalium editions of its signature Big Bang. This new Spirit of Big Bang, nestled in between the Big Bang and Square Bang in terms of
Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon (Price)
Last year Parmigiani entered the hyper-competitive realm of the luxury sports watch with its Tonda PF collection, a move instigated by its new CEO, Guido Terreni. Debuting with an automatic time-and-date (micro-rotor), a chronograph, an annual calendar and an impressive split-seconds chronograph with a gold engine in 2021, Parmigiani unveils a sophisticated flying tourbillon during this 2022 edition of Watches & Wonders. Although a flying tourbillon might not be everybody's idea of a complication for a sports watch, the refinement, finishings and deliberate minimalism that characterise the Tonda PF collection work beautifully in this context. Fitted with Parmigiani's ultra-thin automatic PF517 movement with micro-rotor, the full-platinum Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon follows in the footsteps of the majestic platinum Tonda PF Split Seconds Chronograph launched in 2021.Bare essentialsSimplicity and refinement are the operative words here. The case and dial, crafted in platinum, provide
VIDEO - The Timelessness of the A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia collection by Anthony de Haas and Bruno Moinard - Monochrome Watches
A great looking simple dress watch has a certain “je ne sais quoi”. Of course there’s is only so much you can do as a designer, at least that what most laymen think. And also to us there are some very simple 2, or 3-hand watches that are just… perfect. The size, the shape of the case, that small bevel on the lugs, and that lovely straight-brushed case-band, or any other detail that can just hit the right note. But how difficult is it to find that perfect balance when designing a watch, or anything actually. We set out and asked the experts, Anthony de Haas, A. Lange & Sohne’s director product development, and Bruno Moinard, acclaimed architect and designer. What is timelessness, and how to translate this, in all subtleness, into a design that will remain appealing for decades, or even centuries. Here’s what they told us about this ‘elusive’ property called timelessness.Let me first briefly introduce both gentlemen. Anthony de Haas, pr
