On the contrary to?most of the other buying guides we’ve published, the present one is more of a “wish list” or a “dream list” rather than a proper guide – so consider it a guide for those who already have everything they need but want to be genuinely surprised. Nothing here is rational, it’s all about passion, ingenuity, creativity and impressive mechanics. From the thinnest automatic watch ever created to a signing automaton or an atomic?sympathique?clock, here are the five most marvellous mechanical creations we’ve seen at Baselworld 2018.Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon AutomaticLet’s start straight away with one of the hottest brands of the moment: Bvlgari. Yes, the Italian Maison is a proper watchmaking expert and as a demonstration of this savoir-faire, it has created several record-breaking ultra-thin watches – the thinnest tourbillon, the thinnest minute repeater and here is the new thinnest automatic watch AND thinn
Omega Speedmaster 38mm Co-Axial Chronograph Full Gold
The first watch to land on the Moon has fascinated men and women alike. In 2017, exactly 60 years after the debut of the first Speedmaster, the legendary watch made its debut in a 38mm case, a size far better suited to women's wrists. Easily recognisable as a Speedmaster chronograph, the 38mm models diverge from the men's models with their oval sub-dials and an oval date window at 6 o'clock. Up until today, the Speedmaster 38mm was offered in a choice of steel and bi-metal steel and gold cases and women could also opt for a diamond-set bezel without sacrificing the presence of the all-important tachymetre scale. For 2020, the 38mm Speedmaster collection expands with the arrival of two new full-gold models; one in Sedna gold and the other in 18k yellow gold, both available with or without diamonds on the bezel. Sedna Gold ‘Cappuccino’One of the most popular models in 2017 was the cappuccino', an attractive bi-metal Sedna gold and steel case with a two-
Hands-On - Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute to Piet Mondriaan (Specs & Price)
The Reverso certainly is the most iconic watch of Jaeger-LeCoultre. Of course, most of us know its long and rich history, with its roots linked to British polo players asking for a protected watch and its subsequent?creation in 1931. There’s one thing that this particular construction allowed: personalisation. Today, the back of this classical?Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is a field of expression to celebrate a double centenary: the birth 100 years ago of Dutch art school De Stijl (think Piet Mondrian) and of Dutch retailer Steltman. Here is the specifically-adorned Reverso Tribute to Piet Mondrian. If alone the name “De Stijl” might not sound familiar to everyone, its main representative, Piet Mondrian, is certainly one of the most famous Dutch artists. And if this name still doesn’t do anything for you, a look at this selection of paintings should shine a light on the subject. Together with Theo van Doesburg and Gerrit Rietveld, Mondrian created one of the world's
Hands-on TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-01 Full Black Matt Ceramic - Monochrome Watches
Earlier this year we told you about the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-01 Full Black Matt Ceramic, which made its debut at the 2017 edition of the Geneva Watch Fair. Now that the madness of the first half of the year is starting to subside, we thought this a perfect time to come back and give this watch a proper hands-on review. The first thing you notice when you strap the sizable case of the Carrera Heuer-01 Full Black Matt Ceramic to your wrist is just how light it feels. The second thing you notice is just how dark it looks. The reason why is the same for both; the 45mm matte black ceramic case. Arguably one of the most stealth looking watches produced by TAG?Heuer, the matt black case absorbs all the light around it, which ironically makes the watch really pop on the wrist – even though there is effectively almost no contrasting color on the dial. Louis Erard Excellence email Grand Feu Small Seconds
Louis Erard, the independent Swiss brand with a tradition of accessible luxury, has gained considerable traction in the past couple of years. One of the brand's strategies to gain visibility for its Excellence collection was to invite designers Alain Silberstein and Eric Giroud, and even watchmaker Vianney Halter, to reinterpret the traditional regulator in a more contemporary key. Today, the brand adopts another feature associated with traditional watchmaking and introduces its first Grand Feu enamel dial on board another member of the Excellence family, the elegant Petite Seconde or Small Seconds. Once again, it turns to a third-party supplier’s expertise, in this case, the acclaimed Donze Cadrans enamel workshop, to produce the handmade enamel dial of this edition of 99 watches. True to its accessible price philosophy, the Louis Erard Excellence email Grand Feu Small Seconds will retail for less than CHF 4,000.Petite SecondeThe Petite Seconde joined the Louis Erard Excellence
