6 Ultra-Thin Watches that break records (thinnest watch, thinnest chronograph, thinnest minute repeater, thinnest tourbillon...) - Monochrome Watches
Compiling complications in?a small space like the movement of a mechanical wristwatch, which usually measures 25mm to 30mm diameter and can include up to 500 parts (or even more), isn’t an easy task, especially when it comes to chronographs, minute repeaters or automatons. Miniaturization has always been on of the greatest challenges of watchmakers. And this leads us to this article, as ultra-thin watches are a very interesting category, and overall an extremely challenging one in terms of R&D. Here are 6 Ultra-Thin Watches that break records. The world’s thinnest mechanical watch (all categories included) – Jaeger LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin SqueletteNow we can ensure you that this?Jaeger LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Squelette is a pure technical achievement. OK, it breaks the previous world’s record for the thinnest mechanical watch from only 0.05mm – which is the diameter of an average human hair, so to say, nothing. However, it does it with style and

Laurent Ferrier Galet Minute Repeater (Hands-On) - Monochrome Watches
Laurent Ferrier watches are often defined as “simple”.? Well, at least when it comes to the design. But when a 3-hand watch is fitted with a tourbillon double hairspring or a natural escapement (direct double impulse) and a micro-rotor, you can’t be labelled “simple” anymore. With its latest creation, the most complex in the collection so far, Laurent Ferrier doesn’t break its habits. Meet the impressively clean Laurent Ferrier Galet Minute Repeater.Unveiled in the frame of Baselworld 2018, Laurent Ferrier expands its collection with the most complex piece so far. After a superb tourbillon, complex 3-hand watches (Galet, Galet Square and Montre Ecole), a traveller’s watch and an annual calendar, the small Geneva-based atelier adds what is certainly the ultimate complication for a classic-style brand, a minute repeater. The expansion of the collection is rather impressive these days, with various new movements and multiple new designs. And while
Chris Grainger-Herr on the New 2020 IWC Portugieser Collection, the Big Pilot Safari and COVID-19 (warning: long read) - Monochrome Watches
I guess I need to start this interview with an apology. Sorry, this interview is long, very long, comprising close to 3,000 words. However, the conversation with Chris Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen, was great and there was just so much to say about the new Portugiesers. We had the conversation two weeks ago, in the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown. Chris was in his office, in Schaffhausen, and we had a zoom meeting. It’s weird, not sitting together for a talk, but it is what it is and I guess for the foreseeable future this is going to be the new normal.?Personally I am quite pleased with the new Portugieser line-up; there’s a lot to like! Of course, I’d love to put the new Portugieser Perpetual Calendar on the wrist and see/feel how the 42mm diameter works with such a classic beauty. And the Portugieser Automatic 40 with its small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock looks fabulous and I’m curious how the old Portugieser and the new one with in-house move
Ochs Und Junior Perpetual Calendar, the essence of simplification, a QP with 9 additional parts (specs & price) - Monochrome Watches
If there’s one word?to keep in mind with Ochs Und Junior, it’s simplicity. Usually, simplicity in things?means less attraction (we all love complexity). in watchmaking especially, we want complications. But with Ochs Und Junior, we’re talk about?Ludwig Oechslin, so-to-say the pope of simplicity?in?complications. In fact, simplifying a complication is not a draw. It’s even more complex than doing it with dozens of parts. Besides showing an?intelligence of conception, it even makes a mechanism more reliable and possibly more precise. That’s what the brand did with their annual calendar requiring 3 moving parts (!), or their extremely precise moon-phase with 5 parts. Today, they are doing it again, on the traditional and complex?perpetual calendar. But theirs only have 9 additional parts… The?Ochs Und Junior Perpetual Calendar is the essence of simplification.Traditionally, a perpetual calendar requires, let’s say, about minimum?50 parts, includin
