Collector's Corner - Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronographe Retrograde
In our previous episode of the Collector's Corner, we took a look at the Chopard L.U.C 16/1860 and its siblings that are part of the micro-rotor Calibre 96 family. From the realm of time-only, we move to complications again. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2021 with the stunning Nonantieme, a celebration of the spirit of the Reverso and the possibilities afforded by a swivelling case. This article travels 30 years back to the early 1990s, to a landmark project that saw Jaeger-LeCoultre?relearn Haute Horlogerie as the company developed six limited-edition watches in rose gold, each with a different complication, in the span of ten years. And, since we love our chronographs at MONOCHROME, we're going to look at a particular watch in this special series, namely the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronographe Retrograde.A Brief History of the Jaeger-LeCoultre ReversoWe took our first look at the post-quartz crisis years at Jaeger-LeCoultre in our earlier The Colle
The Return of the Oris Rectangular for the 2021 Collection
Perhaps not the best-known collection at Oris, the Rectangular is back with new proportions, colourful dials and straps. A classic dress watch with smooth Art Deco lines, the latest case size of the Oris Rectangular is designed to appeal to men and women alike. If you go to the Oris website and browse the Rectangular collection, you will see four models pop up, the four new models we are covering in this article. However, if you do a generic search for the Oris Rectangular model, some links will take you back to an older Oris website displaying a host of Rectangular models ranging from date, chronograph, GMT and even women's models. The point being that the Rectangular family is not new, although it is hard to establish the exact year of its debut. Be that as it may, the Rectangular is a stylish dress watch with some of the seriousness of classic rectangular watches (JLC Reverso, Cartier Tank) mitigated by its colourful dials and straps. The New Nomos Autobahn Directors Cut With Steel Bracelet
Imagine yourself travelling through Germany, in your beloved sports car, and heading to an event you've been looking forward to for months, years even. The past two years travelling has been very challenging, sometimes downright impossible, and you are glad the world is opening up again. You find yourself in one of the sections of the German Autobahn, a section without a speed limit if the circumstances allow it. And yes, the weather is clear, you look down on your Nomos Autobahn Director's Cut, and see you have time for some fun. So, with the road opening up, you plant your foot down and head for the horizon, fast.It is a scene something like this I imagine to have crossed the mind of designer Werner Aisslinger penning the first sketches for the Autobahn collection for Nomos. Free of worries, not a care in the world at that very moment, with miles of open roads ahead (Free of Baustelle hopefully). Looking at the Autobahn, you immediately get the connection to cars, racing, highway's,
Seiko Prospex Street Series 'Urban Safari' Tuna Watches
“Inspired by the original 1975 Seiko diver's, this new timepiece features the same iconic outer protector, in a more compact design perfect for urban living.” Seiko’s speech regarding these new models, an entire collection of no fewer than 11 watches, says it all. Take one of the brand’s most important professional specification dive watches, extract what matters (the case, its unique design and its specific architecture), make it modern and less instrumental, add a touch of contemporary colours and texture and you end up with the new Seiko Prospex Street Series ‘Urban Safari’ collection. The most iconic of Seiko’s professional dive watches, the 1968 Hi-beat Diver 300m (left), the 1965 62MAS 150m (middle) and, for today’s article, the 1975 Professional Diver 600m (right), a.k.a ‘Seiko Tuna’.While the brand has already announced that the Automatic Professional Diver 600M ‘Tuna’ will be reissued later this year in a f
Oris Big Crown Limited Edition PA Charles de Gaulle (Specs & Price)
A bit of French pride for today… Indeed, as some of you might know, I’m French and what Oris is releasing today somehow resonates?with me. Based on the military roots of the brand, which is represented by the?Oris Big Crown collection, Oris?is introducing a limited edition watch made to honor the crew of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, the French Navy's flagship. This is why I’m proud to show you the new?Oris Big Crown Limited Edition PA Charles de Gaulle (the Aircraft-Carrier, not the President…)When it was admitted into active service in 2001, the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, or porte-avions in French (hence PA), became the French Navy's (la Marine Nationale) first nuclear-powered surface vessel and France's eighth aircraft carrier. Today, it?remains the only nuclear-powered carrier completed outside the US Navy, and the largest Western European warship currently in commission. For more than 15 years, the Charles de Gaulle has served as a deterr
