Buying Guide - Best GMT/Travel Watches of Baselworld 2019
A moon phase is certainly a nice, slightly poetic complication, annual or perpetual calendars are the best when it comes to displaying the date on a watch, and a tourbillon is a superb demonstration of watchmaking “savoir-faire.” Yet, it is hard to beat a GMT or dual-time complication when it comes to practicality. With our modern lifestyle, which implies regular travelling or working in international environments, it has become more relevant than ever to have a watch that can easily adjust to the local time or display a second time-zone. Here are some of the best “traveller’s” watches that were presented at Baselworld 2019 – and for all budgets.Note: this list is based on on a consensus among the MONOCHROME team and reflects our preferences. If you want to add some watches to this selection, feel free to share them in the comment section at the end of this article.Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT AutomaticThe Octo Finissimo Chronograph was cle
Weekly Watch Photo - Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometrea Spherotourbillon - Monochrome Watches
An intriguing macro photo of a tourbillon is what triggered me to choose this as Weekly Watch Photo. Not just a normal tourbillon, but one with a entirely different hairspring and one that makes an unusual rotation! The connoisseurs among you already recognized the tourbillon from Jaeger-LeCoultre’s new Duometrea Spherotourbillon that we fully explaned in an extensive article about all its special features and techniques. If you look close you can see the cylindrical balance spring, which expands and contracts ‘vertically’. In my opinion the logical next step in the evolution of mechanical timepieces with a complication. The simple logic of it is that measuring and displaying the exact time, does not have to be influe
Weekly Watch Photo - Chopard Classic Racing Collections - Monochrome Watches
Chopard has a long-standing relationship with motorsports, and most collectors are aware of the brand’s partnership with the Mille Miglia classic car rally. Since 2002, Chopard has also been the official timekeeper of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, a biannual event in which classic ’70s race cars race through the Monegasque streets. We aren’t surprised that Chopard dedicated several collections to their relationship with racing events and that they, lucky for us, made for some very cool photos. Recently Chopard introduced a new collection, is the Superfast collection, that features several new in-house movements. This is the Superfast Chrono in 18 carat rose gold. Panerai's desire to move up - Monochrome Watches
Panerai’s desire to move up? That’s at least what it seems like, now they’ve come with a bunch of new models featuring their new in-house movements.Over the last few months Panerai has introduced a number of new models, featuring their own new in-house movements… and a new price list. And since I’ve been planning to buy a new brother for my old PAM 00001 B series (1999), I had a good look at the new price list. Ad - Scroll to continue with article I don’t want to buy another Panerai with the same movement as my beloved old PAM 00001, which is a ETA/Unitas 6497 with reworked bridges and a much better finish. So the in-house movements sound interesting… A few weeks ago I already showed photos of one of the new Panerai models and now I finally know the price… which was a bit of a shock. As usual, my taste transcends m
The MB&F Legacy Sequential EVO wins Aiguille d'Or GPHG 2022
Tonight the watch industry’s focus is dead-set on Geneva, as the 2022 edition of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve has just unveiled who is the grand winner of this year’s awards ceremony! Often regarded as the Oscars of Watchmaking, the GPHG stands for a celebration of all things surrounding mechanical watchmaking. A specially selected jury has narrowed down all the entries into 16 categories with 6 watches each. Out of all the entries, only one has been selected as the grand winner, receiving the coveted Aiguille d’Or trophy for Best of Show. In addition to that, each category winner also received an award. And where in the previous three years the trophy was won by a watch that pushed the envelope in terms of ultra-thinness, this year things have taken a turn in a different direction. Following the Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar last year, and the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept the year before it, the 2022 Aiguille d’Or is won by MB&am
