First Look: The Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 Now in Steel
First presented for the 222nd anniversary of the venerable watchmaker Vacheron Constantin, the 222 was the brand’s answer to the then-growing demand for luxury sports watches with integrated bracelets. The third member of the iconic Holy Trinity of luxury sports watches, next to the Royal Oak and the Nautilus, all three sharing the same base movement (at the beginning), the 222 wasn’t the work of Gerald Genta but of Jorg Hysek. The base for the more modern Overseas collection, in 2022 and as part of the Historiques collection, Vacheron Constantin produced a faithful re-edition of its emblematic model in solid gold?and not the steel watch many were expecting. But here it is! Meet the new Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 in steel.Quick historical reminderIn 1972, the watchmaking world saw the introduction of a brand new concept: the elegant sports watch with an integrated bracelet in a steel case, with a high-end ultra-thin movement and a price that was higher than most go
Grand Seiko 60th Anniversary SLGH002 New Calibre 9SA5 - Review
In March Grand Seiko unveiled its 2020 watch collection and prepared to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the brand. Among the novelties were some elegant and discreet watches paying tribute to the first-ever GS watch, a robust and high-end diver with a brand new Spring Drive movement and watches focusing on traditional decorative skills. And… there was the SLGH002. A watch that, at first, appears as a rather classic piece, bearing all the usual features of the brand. Sharp but elegant, superbly finished and powered by an in-house movement. However, there is more to this watch, which is actually the most important of all the models launched in 2020. And it has to do with its movement.Preliminary note: the watch you see here is a prototype, with a movement that doesn’t entirely reflect the reality of the decoration. For this reason, the photos of the movement are from our colleagues at Hodinkee. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
Collector's Series - Malek's Schwarz Etienne Roma Synergy by Kari Voutilainen
Malek bin Easa is a regular contributor to MONOCHROME. Malek is the driving force and founder of the Emirates Watch Club and in that position a well-known figure in the Arab watch scene. This time we asked the Dubai-based collector about one of his most cherished timepieces, his Schwarz Etienne Roma Synergy by Kari Voutilainen. A model that has his personal touch! Because indeed, it's not just a classic Roma Synergy by Kari Voutilainen (if ever there was anything classic about this watch anyway) but it's the special edition made especially for the members of the Emirates Watch Club.?Let’s discover everything that makes this watch a true gem.?Dr Malek Easa, Founder of The Emirates Watch ClubFrank Geelen, MONOCHROME – When was the first time you laid eyes on Schwarz Etienne as a brand?Malek bin Easa, founder of the Emirates Watch Club – I can't remember exactly, but it was through browsing online a few years ago, maybe in 2016. The brand appealed to me because the compa
Baselworld 2019 - Oris Aquis GMT Date (Specs & Price)
The Oris Aquis is the cornerstone of the brand; a robust, no-nonsense, well-executed and well-positioned diver’s watch that perfectly sums up the brand’s philosophy. Available in multiple versions, with various complications (date, day-date, small seconds, chronograph, pointer-date or regulator), surprisingly this watch has never been equipped with a dual-time function. Problem solved at Baselworld 2019, with the new Oris Aquis GMT Date.?This new GMT edition of the Aquis is far from a revolution, as it shares most of its characteristics with other models of the collection. However, not revolutionary does not mean void of interest. It is surprising, but until today, the Aquis had never featured a dual-time/traveller’s/GMT complication. Admittedly, in the past, there was a watch called the Diver GMT, but this was the predecessor of the Aquis. For the 2019 edition of the Basel watch fair, Oris equips its famous diver’s watch with one of the most useful everyday com
Chanel J12 33mm Calibre 12.2 (Watches and Wonders )
It's been 22 years since Chanel launched the emblematic J12 sports watch, which featured high tech ceramic and an aesthetic that's become iconic for the brand. The collection comes in multiple sizes, including 38mm and 33mm, and this is the first time the standard 33mm variant gets an automatic calibre (following a limited edition). It's a proprietary engine from Kenissi, a movement manufacturer partially owned by Chanel and Tudor (and delivering brands like Norqain), and it has both a unique design and COSC-certification. 38mm models already have the Calibre 12.1 automatic from Kenissi, so the smaller siblings are now at the same level for Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022.The 33mm case is polished ceramic in black or white, which brings different personalities within a monochromatic palette. The unidirectional rotating bezel is steel with a varnished sapphire crystal insert in black or white, and markings are limited to a simple 60-minute scale with Arabic numerals every 15 minutes. A
