A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Timezone - a Personal Story pt. 2 - Monochrome Watches
A few weeks ago we published the first part of my personal story with A. Lange & Sohne. To me, this brand has played an important role in the past one-and-a-half decade of watch collecting, learning about mechanical watches and making Monochrome into what it is today. After that memorable weekend back in 2007, there was another memorable weekend. Another weekend that was important for me, and for Monochrome, and again the Lange 1 Timezone had a prominent role.?That second memorable weekend was only a few years ago, in 2013, when I was invited to spent a few days with A. Lange & Sohne at Lake Como, in Northern Italy. I had just quit my job as policy advisor of the Minister of Transport, to start doing Monochrome full-time – until than I (somehow) managed to run Monochrome in my spare time, during evenings, weekends, and holidays. That was a?big step for me, and for the website!?It was in May and the weather was so-so, a bit of rain, some cold winds, and when the sun broke
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked Ceramic
Looking at the vast range of Royal Oak watches available, which goes from classic Selfwinding models to Grande Complications, the question of which are the most sought-after models arises.?Besides the Extra-Thin Jumbo watches, the full ceramic Royal Oak and the Double Balance Wheel Openworked are clearly very high in terms of desirability. So what if you were to combine both concepts? You’d end up with a stunning Audemars Piguet, the new Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked 41mm Black Ceramic, that we present to you today. This is the first time that the Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked is offered with a ceramic case and bracelet. Prior to this watch, full ceramic (case and bracelet) attire has been reserved for the Tourbillon Extra-Thin, the Perpetual Calendar – in black ceramic, in white ceramic and in black ceramic with openworked movement – and finally for the Tourbillon Chronograph Openworked. And while ceramic is a material often seen on the Royal O
The ultimate balancing act - Monochrome Watches
The quest of making a watch brand successful isn’t an easy one. Especially?because of the ecenomic recession, it might seem difficult. There is however another (surprising) reason why it’s so difficult to keep a watch brand successful.Over at The Watch Lounge, guest author Olivier Muller, wrote three four (edited by Mono) excellent stories about the difficulty of choosing between innovation and tradition. The ultimate balancing act… In part 1 Olivier describes the dillema many watch brands are confronted with. Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of Hublot, also gives his vision on how to build a successful brand. Something he has much experience with, after a successful career with Omega, Blancpain and now Hublot. In the part two of the three part story, the recent developments at Mont Blanc show another solution of dealing with this ultimate balancing act. Alexander Schmiedt, business development manager for Villeret 1858, Mont Blanc’s own development department, is intervie
Recap: The Best Of Colours During Watches & Wonders 2024 and The Geneva Week
While colours have always been part of brands’ collections, they have long been used mostly for the dials – and sometimes, but not always, for the straps… We’ve seen trends for blue or green dials in recent years, as well as a continuous love for salmon-toned watches and even purple making a discreet appearance. But this year, not only we’ve seen dozens of brightly coloured watches, but there’s more than just dials. Colours were everywhere… Unexpected ones mostly, but also in all sorts of watches and combined with textures. Another trend is clearly about colour-matching these coloured dials with the straps, or even using colours for the cases. Here are some of the most appealing and striking coloured watches we’ve seen during Watches & Wonders 2024 and The Geneva Watch Week.Cartier Santos-Dumont Lacquered PeacockFirst presented in 2022, the Santos-Dumont collection with lacquered cases made quite an impression… Available back th
Tutima Grand Flieger Classic Automatic - Monochrome Watches
Many brands are associated with pilot watches these days, which is among the most popular of styles. IWC, Breitling, Zenith, Laco, Hamilton and scores of others have long histories with these tools of aviation and bona fide war credentials to back up contemporary offerings. Glashutte-based Tutima is on this list and perhaps best known for the legendary Flieger Chronograph of 1941. In 2013, the brand released the Grand Flieger Classic Chronograph as a modern take on the 1941 original with design cues harkening back to World War II. The Grand Flieger Classic Automatic is a three-hand variant of the chronograph with a day/date complication and similar wartime roots. Let's take a closer look at this affordable modern classic.BACKGROUNDTutima was founded in 1927 by Dr. Ernst Kurtz who formed two watch factories from the recently bankrupt Glashutte's Deutsche Pr?zisions-Uhrenfabrik (DPUG). Urofa (Uhren-Rohwerke-Fabrik Glashutte AG) concentrated on the production of ebauches while Ufag (Uhren
