Recap - 12 Dates That Marked The Watch Industry in 2020
2020 will be remembered as a traumatic year and a turning point. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a world changer. As far as luxury watches are concerned, the outbreak of coronavirus has shaken fundamental aspects of the industry. Undeniably, it has been and still is an annus horribilis, with Swiss Watch exports plunging by 28.3% over the first nine months of the year. But 2020 will also be remembered as a catalyst for monumental changes for the industry: increased polarization, acceleration of digitisation, disruption of the tradeshow landscape, reshoring to China We have picked 12 dates that in effect or symbolically explain some of the most striking evolutions and trends for the watch industry.13 January 2020 – the timely LVMH Dubai watch weekBefore the coronavirus pandemic spread around the world and hit the watch industry, LVMH Maisons Bvlgari, Hublot, TAG Heuer and Zenith hosted the LVMH Watch Week, from 13-15 January in Dubai. The event provided a timely opportunity for LVMH
The Breitling 765 AVI / Co-Pilot Series of Watches - Part III - Monochrome Watches
The introduction of the automatic chronograph movement was a cataclysmic event for the Swiss watch industry. Up to this point there were only two kinds of watches: the self-winding watch, and the chronograph. In 1969 however this discord passed into history. A fusion of these two became a new reality. In this third and final part of the history of the Breitling 765 AVI / Co-Pilot we are going to examine the impact that the automatic chronograph had for the Avi-Co-Pilot family of chronographs up to their demise in the late 1970's.Returning to the AVI/Co-Pilot series we must stress that initially, the introduction of the automatic chronograph did not have any major impact?in the lineup. However, the year 1969 marked a radical departure. The watches grew up a little bit, from 41mm bezel diameter to a 42.4 mm diameter, however were still powered by the manually wound chronograph calibres. There were three ‘new’ references, plus one. First of all the ref.7650, which was basicall
The Vintage Corner - A Watch Less Travelled - The Heuer Autavia Viceroy
Have you ever bought a vintage watch and wondered what life it led before it ended up in your hands? Well, this is a partial history of one such watch, a Heuer Autavia Viceroy 1163.In 2001 I had a long conversation with a retired Iowa farmer called Jim who had a vintage Heuer Autavia for sale on eBay. I wanted to buy the watch but the seller had stated No International Shipping' so I contacted him and we had a great talk about life. Me being a new father and him now retired, his children long gone and how he had learned to build his own website to communicate online, he was a really good chap and eventually we compromised and agreed he would ship the watch to a friend of mine's office at the Tribeca Centre in New York whom I was due to visit a few weeks later. So fast forward three weeks and after a rather busy weekend in New York and more than a few cocktails, I delivered the watch to my watchmaker here in the UK for service. I had bought the watch as stock for my small collector websi
Recap: The Best Dive Watches of 2024
There’s hardly a category of watches that is as disputed as the diver. Every year, in all price ranges and all possible styles, we’re seeing hundreds of new dive watches released by watchmakers from all over the world. Choosing the best models in this segment of the watch industry is not an easy task and is always subject to long internal discussions. But the MONOCHROME team has made it, and we’ve come to an agreement… Here are what we think were the 5 Best Dive Watches of 2024, ranging from accessible to high-end – and the funny thing is that both are closely related.?Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 42mm TitaniumThe Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is, without a doubt, one of the most important dive watches ever. Created back in the mid-1950s and one of the first purpose-built modern dive watches, it’s long been one of our favourites – but we had our reservations concerning recent collections. They were either too big or perfectly designed and proportioned but
Introducing The Updated Code41 NB24 Chronograph Collection
CODE41 is a relatively new independent Swiss watchmaker that believes in sharing the creative process with watch enthusiasts, even calling its watches community projects. Founded in 2016 by watch designer Claudio D'Amore (from TAG Heuer and Montblanc), CODE41's portfolio is certainly unique with pieces like the T360 Tourbillon and Mecascape Sublimation One, which is both a pocket watch and desk clock. Prices are accessible for what's offered, and the latest NB24 Chronographs continue this with a new dial colour and case option for the existing NB24 series. ?NB24 is named after the brand's ambassador, paraplegic race driver Nigel Bailly, who competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2021 (hence NB24). There are two case options: the existing NativeDNA in Grade 5 titanium, aka AeroCarbon, or the Stratom in Grade 5 titanium from the T360 Tourbillon line. The NativeDNA case is 42mm in diameter, while the Stratom is just a bit larger at 42.7mm, but both are 14.5mm in height. These are bold des
