A. Lange & Sohne at Concours of Elegance, An Interview with CEO Wilhelm Schmid And Tons of Car/Watch Photos - Monochrome Watches
Had you been walking past Hampton Court this weekend, no doubt you would you have heard the roar from the dozens of fine vintage specimens manoeuvring around the palace for the Concours of Elegance. This year was the first time A. Lange & Sohne had supported the event – though, you would be forgiven for confusing this Concourse of Elegance classic car event with the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este at?Lake Como. Both events are supported by Lange, but this show held at Hampton Court Palace is, in fact, no relation to the one on Lake Como. Still, we were there, we enjoyed the scenery (cars and watches are always a winning combo - especially Lange x Classic Cars) and we talked with CEO Wilhelm Schmid. The home of the 2018 Concours of Elegance, Hampton Court.Running from the 31 August to 2 September, the Concours of Elegance began at Windsor Castle in 2012, before moving to St James' Palace in 2013. The show then moved on to Hampton Court Palace in 2014 at the Palace
The Collector's Corner: The Youngtimer Appeal of the TAG Heuer Monza Calibre 36
When you hear the name TAG Heuer, which watches come to mind? The Monaco, the Carrera, or perhaps the Autavia? Maybe the Aquaracer? But what about the Monza? The Monza can be considered the dark horse of TAG Heuer's lineup, occasionally popping up over the years but never having quite the staying power as other, more famous, TAG Heuer models. 2023 saw TAG Heuer relaunch the Monza yet again, this time clad in carbon fibre and powered by an in-house flyback chronograph. We thought it would be a good idea to feature the Monza on The Collector's Corner and take a closer look at an iteration of the model that was released in 2001, the Monza Calibre 36, which is, in our books, the best iteration of this watch to date And here's why.The Monza LineageThe first watch to be mentioned in the Monza lineage was a cushion-cased monopusher chronograph produced in the 1930s. You have to remember that round watches were not as ubiquitous in the first half of the 20th century as they are today. Watchmak
Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary
Often misquoted but never forgotten, Jack Swigert’s terse communication with the NASA Mission Control Center, “Okay, Houston, we've had a problem here”, is the stuff of legend. Following the explosion of an oxygen tank and the consequent drop in voltage in the command and service modules, the space odyssey of Apollo 13 could have very well ended in tragedy. Thanks to multiple pieces of equipment, specifically to their reliable mechanical watches – of course, Omega Speedmaster Professional – the Apollo 13 crew managed to return safely to Earth. And that made the Speedy worthy of NASA’s Snoopy Award. To celebrate half a century of this achievement, Omega introduces the new Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary.?Background – Speedmaster, Apollo 13 and SnoopyAs explained in this in-depth story, the Omega Speedmaster was part of the mandatory equipment for Apollo programme astronauts and was on the wrists of Apollo 13 crew members Lovell,
Introducing the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime ref. 5175 - (LIVE Photos, Specs and Price) - Monochrome Watches
Patek Philippe is celebrating their 175th anniversary, and Thierry Stern chose to celebrate this landmark during the entire year starting from the beginning of Baselworld 2014 to the end of Baselworld 2015. This week Patek?launched a number of limited editions, commemorative pieces, to celebrate their anniversary. Most insiders expected an even more complicated pocket watch than the calibre 89, that was created for the brand's 150th anniversary. However Patek chose for another, at least as spectacular, commemorative piece, by introducing a wrist watch with no less than 20 complications. Here's the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime ref. 5175.Twenty complications in one wrist watch, that really is a lot. Usually when there's a super complicated watch, whether it's a pocket watch or wrist watch, it has massive dimensions. And while 20 complications is already incredibly impressive (wait until you see the list of complications), the (relatively) moderate dimensions of 47 mm in diameter by 1
Oris AquisPro Date Calibre 400 (Specs & Price)
Oris is no stranger to the dive watch. It actually offers multiple sub-collections focused on aquatic activities yet with different users in mind. The Divers Sixty Five is the cool, vintagey option, and the Aquis is a solid contender for the modern daily diver’s watch. At the top-end of the diving watch collection is the ProDiver collection with ultra-functional, instrumental and rugged models. It seems that Oris’ high-performance diver is changing its name to become the AquisPro, and coincidentally it now features the brand’s recently introduced manufacture movement. Here the new Oris AquisPro Date Calibre 400.If the name isn’t the same, the new AquisPro is completely in line with what the previous ProDiver stood for: a highly technical tool watch to serve professional divers on saturation dives equipped with ultra-resistant materials and various functionalities created with professionals in mind. And, looking at the watch, it shows. Don’t expect elegance
