Pre-SIHH 2015: Piaget Altiplano Chronograph Flyback - a new record setter (specs and price) - Monochrome-Watches
If we had to?categorize Piaget into a single subject, it would be for its ultra-slim watches. The brand is indeed not only good at it, it is the unbeatable leader. The?Altiplano has always been the preferred field for Piaget to set thickness records (well, an?absence of thickness to be precise). Last year, the brand came up with the?slimmest of the?slim watches. For the 2015 edition of the SIHH, Piaget?surprises us with a another record: the slimmest chronograph?ever produced, the?Piaget Altiplano Chronograph Flyback. And its?thinness is not its only interesting feature. One single data can sum-up Piaget’s?indisputable?hegemony: 3.65mm. Yes, that’s the thickness of a sapphire crystal, a case, a dial, a set of hands, a movement and a caseback. The Piaget Altiplano 900P is truly impressive. Until?now, Piaget has?accustomed us to slim but simple watches: time-only, small second or date were the only indications displayed on the Altiplano’s dials, which of course remains e
Checking out the edgy Ulysse Nardin Blast Tourbillon
Ulysse Nardin has quite a comprehensive portfolio of collections and is primarily known for its background in marine chronometry but is also regarded as one of the most innovative watchmaking companies. With collections like the Marine, the brand’s naval heritage is kept very much alive, paying homage to the precision marine instruments that made the company famous in the second half of the 19th century. On the other end of the spectrum are far more outspoken collections, with very interesting design and technical features. One can’t ignore the significance of the Ulysse Nardin Freak for instance, which broke new grounds in 2001. One of the latest concepts to emerge from Ulysse Nardin is the Blast collection. Modern, edgy and highly technical, these watches are all about “Xploration of the Xtremes”, as UN puts it (not a typo!). So let’s see just how extreme Ulysse Nardin gets, as we’ve recently had some time with the Ulysse Nardin Blast Tourbillon Wh
A Letter From The Editor - Monochrome Watches
It’s been a pleasure to see the number of readers increase every month and I always enjoy your emails, responses and reactions through all our social media channels. Thank you for that! Since Monochrome has started, back in 2006, it has been a thrill to see Monochrome grow to become one of the defining blogs (or online magazines) about watches. And as you know, we focus mainly on (ultra) Haute Horlogerie and Independent Watchmaking. My latest acquisition perfectly fits the bill. It is a vintage Patek Calatrava ref. 3484 that I bought it for a special occasion. Read on to find out what that special occasion was and to read more news about Monochrome.I have been looking to get a dot.com ever since the beginning, however the owner of monochrome.com didn’t want to relinquish that domain. So the search went on and in a few weeks we’ll be migrating monochrome-watches.com to monochrome-watches.com. And there will be more, like a new video page, a web shop, loads of reviews (
Faberge Visionnaire Chronograph, with Revolutionary Movement by Agenhor (And the Best Video To Explain It) - Monochrome Watches
When you think Faberge, you hardly think about?watches. And even more, you hardly imagine a hyper-innovative chronograph movement, which in some ways revolutionizes centuries of stop watches… However that is exactly what Faberge introduces today: a movement with a brand new display, a brand new architecture and a brand new clutch, solving many of the traditional chronograph issues. Faberge’s new timepieces is a chronograph that displays the elapsed hours, minutes and seconds centrally, with the passage of ‘normal’ hours and minutes around it. Please welcome the?Faberge Visionnaire Chronograph, with revolutionary movement by Agenhor (and we found the best possible video to explain it – thanks TheWatchesTV.)The?Faberge Visionnaire Chronograph as a watchWithout degrading all other chronographs, it must be said that legibility of the new Faberge Visionnaire Chronograph beats most, not every (!!), other chronograph. The reason for this is the way the elapsed ti
Recap: The Best Watches from Independent Watchmakers in 2023
Independent watchmaking, a category defined by low-production, artisanal-like companies where the soul of the creator can be deeply felt in the watches, is one of MONOCHROME’s most important (and favourite) topics. This segment of the industry has always been a highlight for us, and we are committed to promoting the work of these small companies… because this is where passion, innovation and creativity lie. Continuing our selections of the Best Watches of the Year, it is time to look at the five Best Indie Watches of 2023 selected by the MONOCHROME editorial team.Haute-Rive Honoris 1000-hour power reserveA tourbillon watch with 1,000 hours of power reserve on one mainspring… No, there’s no typo in that sentence. We’re talking about a 41-day power reserve in a single barrel in a watch barely larger than a Datejust. This watch, the Haute-Rive Honoris, is the result of the vision of Stephane Von Gunten, a watchmaker with a long track record in the industry. T
