Taming the Seas with the McGonigle Brothers! - Monochrome Watches
The AHCI candidate members and brothers, John and Stephen McGonigle have turned a central Irish town into a haven for high horology and a passion for the sea into a muse! All literature as we know it today boils down to traditional story telling; taking what is and distilling it into a form that makes it appealing so that the moral will last for generations to come. Homer's Odyssey is the product of thousands of years of story telling, written down into verse so that the story could no longer be added to or taken away from. In it, Odysseus is pitted against one form of torment after another - some taking monstrous forms some taking seductive forms. Editorial - The Necessary Transformation... Luxury Watchmaking After COVID-19
There is no doubt that the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic will take a heavy toll on the watch industry. Watch brands are facing a collapse in sales and this crisis will be one of the gravest in decades. Nobody knows what the exit scenario from lockdown will be and how deep and how long the crisis will last. Crises are eventually overcome but companies will emerge to face a perplexing new scenario. Coronavirus will be a catalyst for monumental changes for the world and for the watch industry. The luxury watch industry took a serious hit with the 2008 subprime crisis. Following years of strong growth, the 2008 crisis forced the Swiss watch industry to rethink some of its practices, for instance with regards to pricing (just check the prices of tourbillon watches). The toll was heavy and Swiss watch exports fell by as much as 22.3% in 2009. Transformation is often crisis-driven or crisis-triggered. Naturally, watch brands are now operating in full contingency mode, activating short-ter
5 Cool Finds - Interesting Chronographs from Chopard, Constant, GP and Sinn (and one extra travel watch) - Monochrome Watches
We continue this week with the sixth instalment of our market finds?“5 Cool Finds”, in collaboration with auctioneer Catawiki. Once again, the story is simple. Instead of focusing exclusively on vintage watches, we prefer to look at what we, here at Monochrome-Watches love and know, and we think will be the coming trend: Youngtimers. Here is our expert Ilias' selection of 5 wristwatches, including two racing inspired chronographs from Chopard and Frederique Constant, a traveler’s watch and? a gracious chronograph from Girard Perregaux, and last but not least, a re-edition of a space chronograph by Sinn.Girard Perregaux Traveler IIIf you look for the perfect travelers watch, look no further, because this Girard Perregaux is perhaps the perfect example. It has an automatic movement that features a date and a GMT complication in addition to the very useful and slightly rare alarm function. This GP is 38 mm in diameter but looks bigger on the wrist, it wears more like a 4
Tudor Heritage Black Bay 41
Last year, Tudor Watch surprised us (and by that I mean a very pleasant surprise) with a small, super clean and properly elegant watch: the Black Bay 36. We reviewed it, even our vintage guy tested it… and we loved it. This year, this same stunning look, clean and inspired, comes back in a more masculine diameter. Meet the?Tudor Heritage Black Bay 41 ref. 79540, same but different.Basically, this?Tudor Heritage Black Bay 41 ref. 79540 takes the recipe of last year’s 36mm and adapts it in the classical masculine Tudor case, meaning 41mm. This watch has a slightly different taste than the usual Black Bay. The lack of the rotating bezel actually sets the watch in a different category. No more tool, not yet dress watch… it is the perfect?definition of a casual, elegant sports watch. No useless features, just the essential, but yet a great presence on the wrist, already in 36mm. This year, the increased size brings the concept to men. Ad - Scroll to continue wit
Hands-on Konstantin Chaykin Mars Conqueror MK3 (Price)
On February 18th 2021 history was made, when Nasa's Perseverance Rover landed in the Jezero Crater on the surface of Mars, the Red Planet. With this monumental feat of engineering, mankind is perhaps one step closer to interplanetary travel and colonization of Mars. It will most likely take decades for that to actually happen as interplanetary travel is extremely risky, time-consuming, and above all; expensive. But as we're gearing up for the next chapter in space exploration, and the development of commercial space flights, we need a suitable timing instrument of course. Konstantin Chaykin, Russian watchmaker extraordinaire, has developed a watch that keeps track of time both on Earth, and on Mars, and we've gotten our hands on it for a little while. It's not the first time we've covered this watch but we have had the chance to check it out in real life a couple of weeks ago. And since handling such a piece is a special occasion, especially with live events being few and far between du
