News: Remembering Walter Lange, Founder of A. Lange & Sohne, on his 100th Birthday
Originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashutte, Germany, A. Lange & Sohne has become over the past years one of the most important watchmakers of the Saxon region. The story of Lange Uhren GmbH is, however, not as simple as it seems and despite subsequent generations of the family keeping the brand thriving, conflicts in Europe could have sounded the end of this great manufacture. But it was without counting on Herr Walter Lange, great-grandson of F.A. Lange, and one of the two men responsible, together with Gunter Blumlein, for the glorious return of Saxon precision watchmaking in 1990. Let’s remember a man who would have turned 100 today.?A young Walter Lange exercising his work as a watchmakerWalter Lange, born in Dresden on 29 July 1924, was the fourth child of Rudolf and Hildegart Lange and spent a sheltered childhood in Glashu?tte, which was influenced by the effects of the global economic crisis. Despite the complex situation in Germany, which would
The Garrick S5 continues the brand's devotion to craftsmanship
Long before Switzerland became the epicentre of traditional watchmaking, the Brits were leading the industry basically. Horological greats such as John Arnold, Robert Hooke, John Harrison, Thomas Mudge, and others have all contributed to the craft within the United Kingdom, and beyond. Each of these men was responsible for moving the watchmaking forward, until the downfall of the industry in the UK in the early 1900s. Today, UK-based independent watchmaker Garrick?aims to reinstate British watchmaking tradition in the best possible way it can, by producing very desirable and carefully crafted pieces with an eye for traditional craftsmanship. What started with relatively affordable collections has moved into more complex collections. The newest member of the family is the aptly named Garrick S5, following the success of the previous four S-designated collections.Garrick has morphed itself into a leading company in restoring the art of British watchmaking to the level it once was. Introducing: The New Patek Philippe Calatrava 6196P
Since its introduction in 1932, many consider the Calatrava reference 96 as the paragon of an elegant dress watch. Although the collection has expanded in different directions, fans of the classical, timeless, time-only, ultra-slim, manual-winding dress watch will be pleased to learn about the latest Calatrava released during Watches & Wonders 2025. With its vintage-inspired rose-gilt opaline dial, luxurious platinum case and larger and more powerful 30-255 PS calibre, one feature gives the new Calatrava ref. 6196P a surprisingly contemporary air.A follow-up to the long discontinued reference 5196, the new 6196P shares the 96 in its name in honour of its famous ancestor. The 6196 comes in a slightly larger 38mm platinum case with a slender profile of 9.33mm and a diamond set into the caseband at 6 o'clock. What doesn’t change is the iconic 3-part case of the Calatrava, with flat-edge bezel. Polished with satin-brushed flanks, the smooth bezel is bevelled, and the slender lugs
Interview - Independent Watchmaker Aaron Becsei Of Bexei Watches
There’s watchmaking…. and there’s Watchmaking. To me it becomes Watchmaking with a capital when we’re talking about watchmakers who have the knowledge, the ability and the patience, to create a timepiece entirely by hand. I’m not talking about redesigning a few plates or bridges of an existing movement. Although we all love Dufour’s Simplicity (based on a JLC calibre) or Voutlainen’s Observatoire (based on a Peseux calibre), to me these watches are drop-dead gorgeous, uber-desirable, but maybe not so much watchmaking with a capital W. When talking about Watchmaking with a capital W, think along the lines of George Daniels or Roger Smith. Hand-made is key, and a movement entirely developed by the watchmaker, without ‘borrowing’ the escapement, the keyless works. Today, we’re talking with non-other than a proper independent Watchmaker. We’re talking with Aaron Becsei, the namesake of Bexei Watches. Oh… And a small PS
TAG Heuer honours Senna with a new Special Edition of the Formula 1
The 1st of May 1994 will forever be remembered as one of the darkest days in Formula 1 racing. A day in a racing weekend that was already looking pretty grim, as the sport lost not one but two drivers. Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger both fatally crashed at the (in)famous Imola race track. With Ayrton Senna's status as one of the greatest drivers ever to grace a racetrack, it's only natural that he still serves as an inspiration to many of us today. Collaborations and endorsements are also part of the game, even back in the 1980s. And for TAG Heuer and Ayrton Senna this started in 1988, the year he became world champion. Now, close to 35 years later, TAG Heuer honours the legend once again with the new Formula 1 Senna Special Edition. This 2022 edition of the Senna watch by TAG Heuer is a homage to the company’s first Ayrton Senna-branded watch. As the driver continues to inspire generations of race car drivers and fans the world over, it's no surprise
