Hands-On - A. Lange & Sohne Datograph Lumen Up/Down (Live Pics, Specs & Price)
The A. Lange & Sohne Datograph needs little introduction. Presented in 1999 and updated in 2012, it is one of the most iconic chronographs on the market. The Dato features a flyback chronograph with a precisely jumping minutes counter, two sub-dials recognizable because of their unusual positioning, a quick-set oversized date and a power reserve indicator. Overall, the architecture and the finishing of its movement are a feast for the eyes. Any new model in the series always brings curiosity and excitement among A. Lange & Sohne fans (including team MONOCHROME) So, when we learnt that the Datograph Up/Down was getting the Lumen treatment, it naturally caught our attention. The “Lumen” touchA. Lange & Sohne watches are distinctively German, instantly recognizable for their functional and minimal design. Everything looks balanced, structured and crafted in the respect of a long-lasting watchmaking tradition. The Lumen series reinterprets this classic style with a t
Introducing The Revamped Bulgari Octo Roma Collection (Video, Live Pics)
First introduced in 2012, the Bulgari Octo is one of the most striking watch creations of the last decade. Naturally, the impressive Finissimo saga, which turned the Roman Maison into the master of ultra-thin mechanical watchmaking, immediately comes to mind. But as its name suggests, the Finissimo is part of a larger family, the Octo. Its design combines angles, curves and a rounded octagonal shape with Bulgari's sophisticated design. The brand now revisits the Octo Roma to create an alternative to the Finissimo. Indeed, the new Octo Roma is more versatile and less radical; it is more relaxed, sportier and sturdier while retaining the brand's distinctive style. It comes in different models and with a new interchangeable strap/bracelet system. We had the opportunity to meet with Antoine Pin, Managing Director of the Bulgari Watch Division, and Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, their Product Creation Executive Director, to discover this tasteful redesign of the collection.Naturally, the ma
Value Proposition - The Stowa Flieger Blue Limited (specs & price) - Monochrome Watches
From time to time, we set our selection-mode to another level, far from our actual posh, high-end standards, with a “value proposition” watch that we think deserves to be featured, for its great design, for its great quality / pleasure / price ratio or because we simply like it. It is the case with the new?Stowa Flieger Blue Limited Edition, which basically renew the concept of the B-Uhr watches in a more contemporary (and more wearable) style. A mechanical movement, a bit of vintage pleasure and some originality with a blue dial… That’s what you’re going to have with this new Stowa.Stowa, together with some other brands (IWC, Lange, Laco and Wempe) was manufacturing watches for the German pilots during World War II, watches known by collectors under the name B-Uhren or ref.?FL23883. These pilot watches are now iconic and known all around the world by collectors. Several brands (in fact Laco, Stowa and IWC) decided to reintroduce these watch in more modern
Dan Henry 1975 Skin Diver - Accessible Dive Watch Review (Price)
Skin divers are always fun as they're generally a more stylish take on pro counterparts (hence the name). There isn't a hard definition, but skin divers are smaller, slimmer versions of bulkier professional divers with depth ratings between 100 and 200 metres. Some folk prefer a vintage-inspired re-edition like the Longines Skin Diver, while others gravitate to modern interpretations like Dietrich's SD-1. Skin diving itself is recreational and requires less gear (if any) to explore shallower depths. Dan Henry already has an impressive retro diver, the 1970 Automatic Diver 40mm, and the new 1975 Skin Diver comes in four variants with accessible prices.?The Collector?Dan Henry isn't just a guy who created a microbrand. Many in this field find a horological passion at some point and try to fill a hole in the market with something new or innovative. More often than not, however, microbrand offerings are more of the same, perhaps with unusual colours or a cool design element. The man behind
Back from Basel - Monochrome Watches
I just got back from Basel where Robert-Jan (Fratellowatches) and i visited Baselworld. The watches and juwelry show was totally overwhelming! Last friday, saturday and today (sunday) i’ve seen a LOT of watches, met a lot of nice and interesting people and talked to some of the most famous watchmakers alive. Mindblowing…During the coming week i will do my best to select the best photos and make some stories of all the meetings with watchmakers and brands. So for now i will post some quick and dirty wristshots of some of the most beautiful watches i’ve seen. Omega’s presentation for the 40th anniversary of the Omega Speedmaster Professional was really something. The new Speedmaster Apollo 11 was launched by the astronauts who wore the Speedmaster Professional on the moon! Buzz Aldrin, Charles Duke, Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan where all present at the presentation and panel discussion about flying to the moon (again). But for starters i’d love to share
