The History of the Vacheron Constantin Overseas - The Other 1970s Icon - Monochrome Watches
In the 1970s, the post-war global economic boom came to an end. The new, accurate quartz watches gained popularity and plunged the Swiss watch industry in a deep crisis. As the inexpensive electronic watches began to flood the market, the competition from foreign manufacturers created a major economic turmoil, and with it, the need for Swiss brands to reinvent themselves, making necessary disruptive changes. And that includes the Vacheron Constantin Overseas, a watch born in that exact period. It was at that time that Audemars Piguet decided to introduce something totally new. Together with the celebration of postmodernism, the 1970s style was all about freedom and eclectic, informal, laidback looks. To break away from their classic – somehow conservative – gold dress watches, Georges Golay, the brand's managing director then, contacted Gerald Genta to design an entirely new genre of wristwatch. Hands-On With The Brand-New Take on The Longines Pilot Majetek
For some time now, Longines has skillfully mastered the art of reissues, paying tribute to historical models, all to the great satisfaction of collectors and those with a good eye for classic timepieces. One of the vintage-inspired watches that caught our attention a few years back was the Longines Heritage 1935, a modern interpretation of the Longines Czech Pilot watch developed in the 1920s and supplied to the Czechoslovakian Air Force in the 1930s. The watches were marked as “Majetek Vojenske Spravy”, meaning “property of military administration”, earning the Longines Majetek nickname among collectors. (I believe Longines Vojenske would be a better name, translating into Longines Military and not Longines Property, but it is too late for that). This week, the manufacturer presented a new take on the historical Czech Pilot watch, the Longines Pilot Majetek. The new timepiece is an improvement compared to the Longines Heritage 1935, released in 2014. Let us see
Omega Introduces The Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ Edition
Timekeeping in sporting events is of the utmost importance to not only determine a victor but also to start a race simultaneously for everyone involved. On land, it’s not that difficult to do, even though there can be quite a bit of tech involved. On the water, however, lining up for the start of a race becomes a whole different game. You have very little control, if any at all, over open water and wind, so how do you start a sailing race? By using a Regatta countdown timer that guides you through the various stages with precision and control. In preparation for next year’s 37th running of the America’s Cup and in partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand, Omega has just revealed the new Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ Edition, dedicated to the world of competitive sailing. The America’s cupThe America’s Cup is the oldest competition in sailing, dating back to 1851. It’s a competition between two teams, with one being the defending team
Speedmaster Gathering Commemorating the 44th Anniversary of Neil Armstrong's First Step on the Moon - Monochrome Watches
Our friends over at Fratellowatches celebrate their affection for Omega’s Speedmaster every Tuesday with ‘Speedy Tuesday’. It’s their homage of one of their favorite watches and they come up with another rare limited edition every week. To celebrate the 44th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s first step on the moon – on 21 July 1969 at 2:56 UTC time – they organized a lunch for Speedmaster enthusiasts. The amount of Speedmaster brought to the lunch event, was simply impressive. Fratellowatches shares a load of photos of boxes full of Speedmasters and some closeups of for instance this gold Speedmaster Professional – ref. BA145.022 – from 1969 to commemorate the NASA Moonlanding. This is one of only 1014 pieces ever made, of which the first 39 went to astronauts and members of the White House. According to Fratellowatches, number 1 was intended for Richard Nixon but he refused the watch that is now in the Omega museum in Biel.

Vacheron Constantin unveils two iterations of its refined, ultra-slim Overseas perpetual calendar during Watches & Wonders 2021. Although the technical specifications of the skeletonized model and the blue lacquered dial version are identical to previous ultra-thin perpetual calendar models, the novelty here is the white gold case. Like all Overseas models, the watches are fitted with Vacheron's ingenious patented interchangeable strap device and come with an integrated white gold bracelet and two additional straps for maximum versatility.?BackgroundThe Overseas is an evolution of Vacheron's sporty reference 222 of 1977.
