Indie Watchmaking - Hands-On Cedric Johner Abyss Chronograph
Stepping into Cedric Johner's modestly sized workshop in Carouge in the outskirts of Geneva is a unique experience. Inside you will find an eclectic mix of old tools and hand-operated machines as the independent watchmaker started his career as a jeweller. With this background, Johner is a versatile artisan with a very personal way of looking at traditional mechanical watchmaking, using original techniques and crafts to make his watches by himself, in very small numbers, with a highly personal design. And the Cedric Johner Abyss Chronograph 30th Anniversary, equipped with a superb version of the Valjoux 23, is a typical example of his work. To celebrate 30 years of independent watchmaking, Cedric Johner has started a 30-piece limited edition based on his signature Abyss case in a chronograph version. The beautiful hand-wound, column-wheel chronograph movement found in this limited-edition Abyss is a refinished old-stock Valjoux 23 calibre. The origins of the lege
LVMH Brands Bvlgari, Hublot, TAG Heuer & Zenith all Leave Baselworld - Monochrome Watches
After the “bomb” that was dropped by , Tudor, Patek Philippe, Chopard and Chanel earlier this week, concerning their decision to leave Baselworld, there is no longer any doubt about the (low) relevance of Baselworld for major brands. Subsequently, we have just been told that all four LVMH Brands, those from the watch Division – Hublot, TAG Heuer and Zenith – as well as the House of Bvlgari, have taken the decision to leave Baselworld “in order to preserve their image and their relations with their clients as well with the media“.As of today, most of the top-tier brands that were participating in Baselworld are gone – LVMH, Swatch Group, Seiko, Citizen, Breitling, and sister-brand Tudor, Patek Phillipe, Chopard, Chanel and Gucci (that also announced its departure recently). Almost the entire Hall 1.0 of the Basel fair has lost its exhibitors. As for LVMH brands Bvlgari, Hublot, TAG Heuer & Zenith, the Group justifies its decision by the fa
Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph 180th Anniversary REVIEWED - Monochrome Watches
Over the past years Longines has released quite a few historically inspired timepieces like the Lindbergh Hour Angle Watch and the Weems Second-Setting Watch, which both featured in our History of the Pilot’s Watch part IV. But Longines didn’t stop there. They do have a very rich and long history, meaning many important timepieces from the past that easily qualify for a re-issue. Today we’re gonna have a look at the Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph that was released in celebration of the 180th anniversary of the brand.Today Longines is not only known for their rich history, but also for the ‘affordable luxury’ they create. I cannot think of another brand that has so much, including in-house movements, and prices them in the range from roughly € 1.000 Euro to 6 or 7k Euro for a full gold timepiece with an in-house column wheel chronograph. If that isn’t impressive! For this review Longines lend us a very special piece that was intro
The 2019 Ulysse Nardin Diver Chronograph 44mm // Review, Price
Ulysse Nardin is clearly in the middle of an important restructuring process and updating most of its emblematic watches. After new watches in the Marine collection, it was time for the Diver to get a fresher look. Following last year’s evolutions on the 3-hand models, the brand now comes up with three new yet instantly recognizable Diver Chronographs.?Still imposing, still bold, still unmistakably Ulysse Nardin, the new chronos benefit from the latest design upgrade and jettison a lot of ballast in favour of a lighter, more streamlined and contemporary look. The new 2019 Ulysse Nardin Diver Chronograph 44mm is available in two regular models – 18k rose gold/blue and titanium/black – as well as a limited edition “Hammerhead Shark” in titanium/blueWhat's new?Last year, Ulysse Nardin unveiled its redesigned Diver Chronometer,?a pared-down and more contemporary approach to its flamboyant Divers of the past.?If you look back at this limited edition Monaco Yacht
Hands-On With The Ultra-Cool Ice-Blue Tissot PRX Powermatic 80
Sometimes, small changes can make a huge difference, and create great enthusiasm. Yes, I know that the topic of the day will just be about a new dial colour. But in all fairness, that was a highly-anticipated one, an addition to an already very popular collection that will only make it more desirable. Tissot, with the PRX collection, seems to have found the sweet spot. Cool, well-made, well-equipped, accessible and answering to the market’s demand, it ticks many boxes. And as the collection evolves, Tissot answers the expectations of its clients. Easy-change rubber straps? Done. Chronograph in cool colours? Check. 35mm Automatic? Not entirely there yet… Ice-Blue dial with automatic movement? Yes, it’s there, and this Ice-Blue Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 is really as cool as we wanted it to be!When in 2021 Tissot launched the PRX collection, it somehow created a small tsunami. Right in the middle of the hype for 1970s-inspired sporty-chic steel watches with integrated bra
