Best of Show, including a Plethora of Tourbillons and another World-Record - Monochrome Watches
Baselworld 2019 has come to an end. As always, it was a rather packed event, despite the strange impression caused by the absence of Swatch Group's brands, and an unusually high number of brands presenting their watches in different locations around the official Messe'. If the mood was good overall, the future of the show was on everyone's lips with speculations regarding the attendance of the LVMH brands, Breitling and many more to the next editions of the fair. Now the dust has settled, team MONOCHROME looks back and chooses the best of show…Note: this selection is based on a consensus among the MONOCHROME team. It reflects our preferences among watches unveiled at Baselworld 2019. For instance the MB&F Flying T could have (easily) made if to this list, but it was presented about a month ago and thus not a Baselworld ‘novelty’. If you have a different view on what could be the best watches of Baselworld 2019, feel free to share them in the comment section at the
Embracing the Contemporary Appeal of Forged Carbon in Designs both Old and New - Monochrome Watches
It’s often said the watchmaking industry is a conservative business, and for the most part that’s quite true. Traditional techniques are still at the heart of the vast majority of mechanical watches, but there are those who dare to push back boundaries and venture into the unknown. This can result in innovative materials, new designs and surprising collaborations. But, as some of the watches on this list perfectly showcase, cutting-edge materials can also be used to give a new spin on retro-inspired design. With that in mind, we take a closer look at some of the most refreshing carbon watches in recent times!Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 forged carbonTissot’s mighty cool PRX needs little introduction. Prior to this Forged Carbon edition of the 40mm wide PRX, we only had stainless steel cases. Ok, there’s the gold PVD-coated PRX but that’s still steel underneath. The use of forged carbon drops the weight down from roughly 135 grams on a full bracelet, to approxi
Throwback - The most accurate type of calendar possible - the Andersen Geneve Perpetuel Secular Calender - Monochrome Watches
Yesterday, on February 29th, we decided to dig deeper into the concept of the perpetual calendar and explain why the leap year exists. It was the perfect occasion for this, since February 29th only occurs once every four years. In order to tell the story properly, we had to dive deeper into astronomy and history, and of course to have the various calendar watches. However one watch had our highest consideration, a watch that we almost forget about, but that has to be regarded as a serious?technological achievement. This watch is equipped with something ultra-rare: a secular perpetual calendar. The secular perpetual calendar is?even more accurate than a traditional perpetual calendar, or Quantieme Perpetual (QP.) Let's have a look at an old beauty, created by non-other than Svend Andersen. Here's the?Andersen Geneve Perpetuel Secular Calender and the announcement that will be telling you more about?this concept soon!?In our previous article, we explained?what a perpetual calendar actual

The Lamborghini Muira MB&F Horological Machine 5 or HM5?is back on the road. If you’re not too young or if you’re fond of an era that could seem very strange to teenagers (yes, we’re talking about the 1970s) the shape of the HM5 should be familiar to you. Apart from the steampunk-inspired Legacy Machine 101 recently revealed, the HM5 is based on one of Max Busser’s favorite theme, the?futuristic-looking icons of the 1970's.
