It was 40 years ago... the first automatic chronograph - Monochrome Watches
40 Years ago, on 3 March 1969, the first automatic chronograph movement was introduced. This movement,?nick-named Chronomatic, was developed by a joint venture of Heuer, Breitling, Buren and Dubois-Depraz. The Chronomatic was used by Heuer, Breitling and Buren under the name of caliber 11.Cover of Swiss Watch and Jewelry Journal – nr.2 1969It actually started with the development of a HMS (hours, minutes, seconds) movement that got it’s power from a micro-rotor! Buren patented a micro-rotor winding system, that was called planetary rotor, in 1954. However it took them untill 1957 before it saw production and later, in 1962, the design was refined into caliber 1280.The new caliber 1280 had a slightly larger swinging mass than the earlier caliber and the swinging mass now swung over the center of the movement. This caliber, also called Intramatic, won the Prix d’Honneur at the 1964 Swiss National Exposition in Lausanne. A year later the micro-rotor was further refined i
Weekly Watch Photo - Cartier Tank Cintree - Monochrome Watches
The Cartier forum @ Revo-Online keeps coming with very interesting stories about Cartier’s overwhelming history of wrist watches. And in the mean time they add a load of historical information and gorgeous photos…Like the new story about the evolution from the Cartier Tank Cintree to the new Tank Americaine Flying Tourbillon. Cartier first released a Cintree in 1921 and it’s a very elegant and slim wrist watch. The Cintree was available in several variations throughout the past 90 years, but has never been produced in large numbers, hence they are very sought-after. This model was released in 1989 and produced in larger numbers. While maintaining much of the Cintree-DNA, the Tank Americaine had a
The Sustainable Cedric Bellon CB01 GMT x Ace
Sustainability is a big thing in today’s society, and rightfully so as we’re heading in the wrong direction very fast when it comes to our beloved Planet Earth. The shift towards more environmentally friendly and sustainable ways of living also found its way into the watchmaking industry, with various brands doing their best to push back waste and pollution in whichever way they can. Through a wide range of programs or new production initiatives, carbon footprints are cut down and waste is transformed into resources. This strategic push has motivated watch designer Cedric Bellon to create the most sustainable watch available to date. Ace Jewelers, a Dutch watch and jewellery retailer led by Alon Ben Joseph and his family, has embraced this concept to create a special edition watch, the Cedric Bellon CB01 GMT x Ace Jewelers.Cedric Bellon, Watch Angles & Ace JewelersDesigner Cedric Bellon is quite a well-established name within the watchmaking industry, even though people
Weekly Watch Photo - Roger Dubuis Pulsion Skeleton Flying Tourbillon - Monochrome Watches
Roughly ten years ago I fell in love with a watch that I saw in an ad in a watch magazine. At the time I had no idea about complications, different levels of finish or just the basic functioning of a mechanical watch. I just knew that watch was STUNNING. It was the Roger Dubuis Golden Square Flying Tourbillon, with a white dial and huge black roman numerals.?While this still is a watch that I’d love to add to my collection one day, if funds will ever permit this. I also realize that it’s a rare one, limited to 88 pieces and of course long sold out. A few weeks ago Roger Dubuis contacted me that I was allowed to review a model from the new Pulsion collection, that was released in January of this year. Hands-On - The New Certina DS-1 Powermatic 80 (Specs & Price)
If you are in the market for a solid yet stylish 3-hand daily beater at an affordable price, the Certina DS-1 Powermatic 80 should be on your radar. This summer, the DS-1 returns with three new dial colours and interchangeable straps, one of them made from plastic recovered from the ocean. Like the DS-1 Big Date of 2019 designed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Certina's DS (double security) concept of 1959, the watch blends a subtle vintage vibe with a resilient case and a robust Powermatic movement. ?Double Security turtle ShellIt's natural to associate Certina's Double Security concept with dive watches, and there are plenty of those in the brand's repertoire. After all, when it was introduced in 1959, the DS concept marked a big step toward making watches more reliable and water-resistant. The original DS concept, which is still used on all DS models today, relies on series of O-ring seals on the setting stem and crown with a special seal on the reinforced caseback. Like the ha
