First Look: The new Sand Gold Alloy of the AP Royal Oak Flying Tourbillon Openworked
While the Royal Oak was initially born in stainless steel – which, in our opinion, remains the material of choice for the classic Jumbo – the emblematic Audemars Piguet collection rather quickly embraced gold. Since then, precious metals have become integral to the series, always leaving a memorable impression. In its latest venture, the brand introduces a novel 18k gold alloy labelled “sand gold” – a mix of solid gold with copper and palladium – unveiling a new variant of the Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked chosen to showcase the unique aesthetic qualities of this material. The handsome monochromatic Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked debuted in stainless steel in 2022 as part of Royal Oak’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. This timepiece featured Audemars Piguet’s latest in-house 2972 calibre, an evolution of the Calibre 2950 introduced in 2018 in the Code 11.59 collection. Ad - Scroll to conti
The best watches of 2010 - Monochrome Watches
Now the year has almost come to an end it’s time to look back and to see which watches made the best impression. So here is Monochrome’s selection of Best Watches of the Year 2010. Like every year, there where many new watches. Some expected for a long time, some unexpected and a total surprise. But the question is which one made a lasting impression? Some have only been released on the drawing board, but are not completely ready yet. These watches, although some are really impressive, won’t count for this years election.Because watches come in all price ranges I can’t compare a $500,000 watch with a $1,500 watch. So there will be a few categories, based on price. The first category is without any limits, the second category is up to $200,000 , the third category is up to $15,000 and the fourth and last category is below $5,000.?The only verdict is my personal opinion ?? Trintec Zulu-03 Altimeter - Full Review of the first aircraft instrument watch (live photos, specs & price) - Monochrome-Watches
The recent anniversary of the Bell & Ross BR01 collection, which came to light some 10 years ago, led me to a question that I couldn't answer immediately. The square Bell & Ross might be iconic at this moment in time, but is it the first aircraft instrument inspired watch? The question would slip to the back of my mind as life continued, but as luck would have it, an answer recently emerged: the Trintec Zulu-03 Altimeter. Before we head deeper into what's what, I have to point out the obvious here. The Trintec watches are in no ways comparable in terms of watchmaking and finishing to the Bell & Ross watches. Yes, they come with automatic movements, and yes are directly inspired by aircraft instruments but they are a) not Swiss Made and b) not in the same price bracket by far as the Parisian counterpart. Speaking in terms of watchmaking, it isn't something we tend to cover on Monochrome but there is a story here that is worth investigating. Ad - Scroll to continue
Review IWC Big Pilot's Watch TOP GUN Mojave Desert IW506003
During the digital edition of Watches & Wonders 2021, IWC presented two Big Pilot's models in sand-coloured ceramic cases: the Big Pilot's Watch TOP GUN Mojave Desert as well as a more complicated Perpetual Calendar model, which we covered in April. The Mojave Desert sand-coloured ceramic case theme took off in 2019 with a Pilot's Watch Chronograph TOP GUN. Although the TOP GUN family has always favoured black ceramic cases, these two new references mark the first time IWC uses sand-coloured ceramic on a Big Pilot's watch. We spent some hands-on time with the automatic model (Ref. IW506003), and this is what we found.Take my breath awayThe United States Navy Fighter Tactics Instructor program, popularly known as TOP GUN, is where fighter and strike techniques are taught to the Tom Cruises of the real world. As a brand with a genuine link to pilot's watches since 1936 with the release of the “Special Pilot's Watch,” followed in 1940 by the iconic Big Pilot's Watch 52 T.S
