Interview - Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of Bvlgari, on Collections, Manufacturing, Distribution and Watch Fairs
Gauging the performance metrics of the company, Jean-Christophe Babin's role as CEO of Bvlgari since 2013 has been an impressive success. Bvlgari's watch collection is enjoying a rinascimento?of sorts, in particular with the spectacular Finissimo' saga. During the Cinemagia event, the brand's Haute Joaillerie and Haute Horlogerie presentation in Capri, we were able to sit down with Jean-Christophe Babin to better understand the changes at Bvlgari and the perspectives for the brand.Xavier Markl, MONOCHROME – With its rich DNA Bvlgari creates fascinating watches. What makes them stand apart?Jean-Christophe Babin: Our watches are truly Italian. They convey the spirit of Leonardo da Vinci. Octo, Lucea or Serpenti are all very architectural, constructed, inspired by Italian art and architecture. On the other hand, our watches are also extraordinary from a technical perspective – just think of a grande sonnerie or of the Octo Finissimo saga. We are really different from the class
Interview - Jupp Philipp, New Owner of Fortis, on Reviving the Brand
Founded in 1912 by Walter Vogt in Grenchen, Switzerland, Fortis is known for manufacturing rugged, functional watches with a forte for pilot and cosmonaut watches. Among the milestones in the brand's rich history, Fortis has to be credited for its role (along with British watchmaker John Harwood) in the development of the automatic wristwatch in the early 1920s. Just a few months ago, the company was acquired by Jupp Philipp.?As the confinement period comes to an end here in Switzerland, we sat down with the new Fortis owner and CEO to talk about his plans to revive this fascinating brand.Xavier Markl, MONOCHROME – Thanks for welcoming us here in Grenchen. How did you manage the confinement period?Jupp Philipp, Fortis – We have taken advantage of the quiet period. There is so much to do when relaunching a brand like Fortis. We worked from home 10 hours a day, planning the future of Fortis with the management team, in particular, the new collections and new design. We have d
Weekly Watch Photo: The Arnold and Son Collection - Monochrome-Watches
In the past year?we have covered Arnold and Son quite often. And with good reason, because they have unveiled a lot of impressive novelties. In our article about the new?UTTE Tourbillon?we even started with “Yet another novelty from Arnold & Son!” and?we explained that we were rather impressed by Arnold & Son. For our Weekly Watch Photo we asked several of our befriended brand for some summer photos, and of course we also asked Arnold & Son. They work together with Watch-Anish?for their (superb) photos and we get to present you even more of their collection…What is truly interesting with Arnold and Son is the number and the complexity of the watches in collection. And even if the brand is quite new and is not a proper manufacture (meaning an integrated structure with R&D, conception and fabrication in the same entity), they never hide the fact that all the movements were?coming from the highly qualified manufacture La Joux-Perret. And another very inte
Chopard L.U.C Louis-Ulysse - The Tribute - Monochrome Watches
There has been a much publicized concern within the watch industry about over reliance on one or two key suppliers of components. Some companies have addressed this by purchasing their own case makers, developing their own movements and seeking greater independence.?Chopard, the family owned concern, has sought vertical integration, with virtually all components being made in- house.?I recently toured one of their production facilities in Meyrin on the outskirts of Geneva. The breadth of skills within the company is staggering. They even have their own foundry where ingots of precious metals for case making are formed! Ad - Scroll to continue with article My admiration for Chopard's L.U.C models is immense. The finishing of the watches surpasses many timepieces with greater brand awareness. Several of the watches bear the Poin?on de Geneve, the Hallmark of Genev
