RzR Tecoron - Affordable Carbon Fibre Watch now on Kickstarter (Specs & Price)
When a watch debuts with an unusual material, such as ceramic, titanium or even sapphire crystal, a relatively high price usually reflects the rarity and increased manufacturing difficulty (and, of course, marketing prowess). RzR Watches is bucking the trend with an affordable piece comprised of 80% carbon fibre, a lightweight and durable material that's five times less dense than stainless steel. This kind of development is usually associated with established brands with deep pockets (think Richard Mille, Bvlgari or AP), but founder Ricardo Zamora Rojas has spent the last four years working with production partners to bring the RzR Tecor¨®n to market at fraction of the price. His new watches now hit Kickstarter. Born in the Canary Islands, Spain, Ricardo moved to the UK in 2014 with a newly earned mechanical engineering degree. After spending the last four years developing the RzR Tecor¨®n, he returned home to the Canary Islands to bring his vision to fruition. Th
Interview - Jupp Philipp, New Owner of Fortis, on Reviving the Brand
Founded in 1912 by Walter Vogt in Grenchen, Switzerland, Fortis is known for manufacturing rugged, functional watches with a forte for pilot and cosmonaut watches. Among the milestones in the brand's rich history, Fortis has to be credited for its role (along with British watchmaker John Harwood) in the development of the automatic wristwatch in the early 1920s. Just a few months ago, the company was acquired by Jupp Philipp.?As the confinement period comes to an end here in Switzerland, we sat down with the new Fortis owner and CEO to talk about his plans to revive this fascinating brand.Xavier Markl, MONOCHROME – Thanks for welcoming us here in Grenchen. How did you manage the confinement period?Jupp Philipp, Fortis – We have taken advantage of the quiet period. There is so much to do when relaunching a brand like Fortis. We worked from home 10 hours a day, planning the future of Fortis with the management team, in particular, the new collections and new design. We have d
The Byrne GyroDial changes faces day by day with four rotating cubes
Versatility is what brings a certain degree of joy to us all. At least, that’s what I’d like to believe when it comes to life and watches. Each and every one of us is unique, with different feelings, emotions, preferences and likes and dislikes. Just compare collectors and their watches, and you’ll note there are no two alike. But in watchmaking, designs are mostly fixed, with zero versatility. Sure, you can opt for a different case material or a dial colour, but once the purchase is made, the versatility ends there. Some mix it up with different straps, but the watch itself remains the same as when you bought it. Every now and then, watches come along that tend to break that cycle and offer real, bona fide versatility. Two-faced watches like the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso or the Bovet Monsieur Bovet already provide several designs in a single watch. Newcomer Byrne Watches taps into that same sensation with its inaugural GyroDial.Byrne Watches is founded by John Byrne,
Value Proposition - The Star Dust and Black Dust From Balticus Watches - Monochrome Watches
A few months ago, we told you about a young brand from Poland called Balticus. At the time, they were raising funds on Indiegogo for two new automatic bronze watches; the Big Wave and the Grey Seal. Today, we're getting hands-on with another two models from this young company, the descriptively named Star Dust and Black Dust. At once familiar and unusual, both models come in at under EUR 600 and offer a lot of bang for the buck, although they may not suit everyone's tastes.Balticus WatchesAdmittedly, when you think of watch brands, Poland is probably not the first country that springs to mind. It's understandable, therefore, that you might be a bit hesitant to spend your hard-earned cash on an unknown entity. We should point out here, though, that Balticus is that it is not exactly a brand-new' brand. Although they only ran their first crowd-funding campaign a few months ago, the company has actually been around for almost 3 years and selling their watches in boutiques throughout Polan
Tissot Heritage Navigator Sageata Orientului Limited Edition
Tissot and its Romanian distributor Albini Prassa celebrate the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Franco-Romanian airline company CFRNA (Compagnie Franco-Roumaine de Navigation Aerienne), which was the first to connect Europe and the Asian continent by air. Tribute is paid by launching a limited edition of the Tissot Heritage Navigator, a well-known watch that we've covered here, renamed the S?geata Orientului/East Arrow to mark the occasion.Founded in 1920, CFRNA was the first operative commercial transcontinental company in the history of aviation. The S?geata Orientului (or Fleche d'Orient, East Arrow) offered flights from Paris to Istanbul in just one day, via Strasbourg, Prague, Warsaw, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade and Bucharest. A century later, Tissot and Albini Prassa, its official distributor in Romania, pay tribute to the S?geata Orientului with a limited edition world time watch featuring a black dial and a city ring with the cities of Paris, Bucharest and Istanbul in r
