Petrolhead Corner - Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2021
Every year, the vintage automotive world's creme de la creme gathers on the beautiful grounds of Grand Hotel Villa d'Este for one of the most prestigious car-related events. The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d’Este is a Concours where 50 of the rarest and unique cars are reunited. Out of these 50 cars, built between 1920 and 2000 (roughly), a “Best of Show” is selected by a specialized jury. However, the event is more than that, as not only the 50 invitees are on display, but also other icons from prestigious car manufacturers past and present. It is a true celebration of the design and engineering of cars, hosted in breathtaking scenery. And for this year's edition, we were invited to join by A. Lange & Sohne, one of the event’s partners since 2012.Set on the incredibly beautiful shores of Lake Como, in the north of Italy, near Milan, the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este comes pretty close to motoring heaven. With a carefully curated selection of cars, invited
Auction - Unique Roger W. Smith Series 1 by A Collected Man
Over the years, A Collected Man (or ACM), a watch curator based in London, has become one of the finest destinations for everything high-end independent watchmaking. For instance, they’ve been able to sell a 7 million Philippe Dufour Grande et Petite Sonnerie, or a simple yet tastefully-designed Baltic watch. Their business has recently expanded to online auctions, and the latest to appear is rather special and is exclusively focused on a single watch. And the watch in question is exceptional, being a unique, specifically commissioned Roger W. Smith Series 1. A monument of British watchmaking that will also benefit a good cause. If ACM has earned a reputation for the quality of the watches offered for sale, Roger W. Smith is without a doubt amongst the most important and talented watchmakers to perform this art on British soil. The sole apprentice to the late Dr George Daniels, leading him to master the 34 skills that comprise the Daniels Method, Smith eventually transitioned from
Pre-SIHH 2019 - IWC Pilots Watch Chronograph Spitfire Bronze IW3879 Manufacture Movement (Hands-On, Specs & Price)
Last but not least, of the four pilot watch ‘teasers’ that IWC has released ahead of the SIHH 2019, is this well-proportioned, vintage-inspired, bronze-cased, no-nonsense chronograph upgraded with a manufacture movement. All of that might sound like music to the ears of many collectors. At least, it does to us. Meet the?IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Spitfire Bronze ref.?IW387902.Earlier this year, IWC introduced the?Pilot's Watch Chronograph IW377724, a nice, slightly vintage-inspired piece bringing back some of the design elements found on the Mark II and the 1990s ref. 3706 – the simple Flieger Chronograph, without the rattrapante function. Basically, this watch was the modern iteration of the model that relaunched pilot’s watches at IWC. Today, IWC applies a similar concept to the?Pilot's Watch Chronograph Spitfire… and more! Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Military now in Black or Bronze - Monochrome Watches
Back in 2017, Ulysse Nardin launched a new sub-collection, still inspired by the classic Marine Chronometer design, but with a more casual look and a more accessible price. This watch, the Marine Torpilleur, first came in a traditional style, with a white dial, Roman numerals and a power reserve indicator (faithful to 19th-century chronometers). In 2018, the brand turned this watch into something bolder, sportier and more field-oriented, with the cool-looking Marine Torpilleur Military. Today, two new limited editions join the ranks, one in Black DLC, one in bronze. The idea with the Marine Torpilleur was to offer the undeniable charm of the Marine Chronometer watches in a more contemporary-looking 42mm case (no more integrated lug module), with the typical dial layout of such watches and a more accessible price – in fact, positioning itself as the entry-level watch of the brand, even though it still featured a nice in-house movement. Altogether, this was a tasteful facelift to th
My traveling companions - Monochrome Watches
I’m just back –?in one piece – from a three week trip to Jordan and the Egyptian Sina? desert, and here are?some photos that I made during my trip. We planned a trip to Jordan and were considering to visit Syria and/or Egypt depending on the available time and travel possibilities. From the Jordan southern coast it was a short boat trip to Nuweiba in Egypt and the reefs in that area are just great, so time for some diving. On this?trip I had two watches with me:?the IWC Pilot Watch Chronograph (ref. 3717) that I?also had on my wrist a few weeks earlier, when I?visited New York. The other one was my all time favorite vacation watch, the Citizen Automatic Diver.?I’m gonna spare you all the travel stories, since?the?pictures will tell the story for me. I have to add that the historical city of?Petra is very, very impressive and well worth a visit. Another thing you may not miss is taking a plunge into the Dead Sea. That’s a funny experience!
