Collector's Corner - The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Perpetual 1990s
For our new installment of The Collector's Corner, we are returning to a Richemont brand, one that is known as “La Grande Maison”, or the watchmaker of watchmakers. That's right, this week we are looking at Jaeger-LeCoultre, specifically, a 1990s hit that lives on in the current collection. We love complications here at MONOCHROME, and we are switching things up a bit and are going with the Master Control Perpetual Calendar, a watch that I love to name the forebear of the Dr. Strange watch. Let's have a look at a typical complicated youngtimer.?After the quartz crisis led to a culling of the herd in the Swiss watch industry, the 1980s and 1990s were a time of rebirth and re-discovery. In French-speaking Switzerland, in Le Sentier, Jaeger-LeCoultre embarked on a journey to relearn mechanical complications by developing a series of six limited-edition Reversos in rose gold, each made in 500 pieces: power reserve and date, tourbillon, minute repeater, retrograde chronograph, d
Spirograph Tourbillon by Karsten Fr??dorf - a tourbillon for proper daily use - Monochrome Watches
I said it before and I’m saying it again, my?wrist is rather lucky, as it gets to wear quite some extraordinary timepieces. For the past three months, I’ve been wearing the Spirograph from master watchmaker Karsten Fr??dorf, and it has been worn as a?daily beater. And that was exactly what Karsten asked me: “Wear it as your daily watch?and do not treat it as a fragile timepiece only because it features a large tourbillon“. Wearing the Spirograph proved to be a sheer pleasure and I enjoyed that huge tourbillon more than I ever thought I would. In fact, it has been one of the nicest watches I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing, ever. Here’s a full review of the Montres-KF Spirograph, a tourbillon wristwatch that can easily withstand shocks up to 5,000G and magnetic fields up to 1,000 Gauss (and that makes it a perfect tourbillon for everyday wearing.)Shock resistance has been one of the main goals while developing this watch. Karsten wanted to create a w
The 2019 Ulysse Nardin Diver Chronograph 44mm // Review, Price
Ulysse Nardin is clearly in the middle of an important restructuring process and updating most of its emblematic watches. After new watches in the Marine collection, it was time for the Diver to get a fresher look. Following last year’s evolutions on the 3-hand models, the brand now comes up with three new yet instantly recognizable Diver Chronographs.?Still imposing, still bold, still unmistakably Ulysse Nardin, the new chronos benefit from the latest design upgrade and jettison a lot of ballast in favour of a lighter, more streamlined and contemporary look. The new 2019 Ulysse Nardin Diver Chronograph 44mm is available in two regular models – 18k rose gold/blue and titanium/black – as well as a limited edition “Hammerhead Shark” in titanium/blueWhat's new?Last year, Ulysse Nardin unveiled its redesigned Diver Chronometer,?a pared-down and more contemporary approach to its flamboyant Divers of the past.?If you look back at this limited edition Monaco Yacht
Live from the SIHH for Montblanc - Monochrome Watches

Of course we’ll keep you updated in other watches, but let’s start with a relative newcomer in the watch industry. On January 17th, Monday morning, one of the two most important watch fairs of the year started, the SIHH or Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie. The other fair is called Baselworld, which will be held in March of this year. Montblanc might not seem like the typical watch brand, but after less than two decades they have become a very strong and serious player in Haute Horlogerie. For it’s design they found inspiration in the first time writing machine, invented by… you probably already guessed it, Ni
Speake-Marin Introduces the Spirit Mk II DLC - Monochrome Watches
Followers of our online magazine will, without a doubt, know the British watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin. His work with legendary watchmakers Roger Dubuis and Daniel Roth has led to Chapter Two by Ma?tres du Temps, and he was also involved in Chapter One together with Christophe Claret. Peter’s own watches are already well-known among collectors and connoisseurs of fine watchmaking, always sporting the familiar Speake-Marin style elements. Probably best described as a perfect balance between classic and bold, however today that subtle balance tips over: the newest version of the Spirit Mk II becomes a RAW Spirit in a matte black DLC-coated ‘jacket’. How cool is that!?!In 2011 Peter introduced a much bolder piece than ever before and named it Spirit Pioneer. That one was limited to 68 pieces – 1968 is Peter’s year of birth – and it sold out within a few weeks. An important piece for Peter, and that’s why the Spirit Mk II was also engraved with the
