Lange & Sohne Pour le Merite - An interview about Honouring Fine Watchmaking - Monochrome Watches
The Lange & Sohne Pour le Merite Collection is a pinnacle in fine watchmaking. Our friend Peter Chong, who featured here on Monochrome on many ocassions, wrote a book about the very best watches coming from Saxony, Germany. Friend of Monochrome, Peter Nievaart, interviewed Peter Chong about his passion for A. Lange & Sohne and the book he wrote in honor of the Pour le Merite Collection. Peter Nievaart in conversation with Peter Chong….Pour le Merite book - photo by Edwin HeusinkveldLast Christmas I received a truly remarkable book about the Pour le Merite collection of A. Lange & Sohne, written by Peter Chong. It is not just a book about watches. It a tribute to fine watchmaking in Glashutte with a monumental size of 42 by 30 centimeters. The book contains many A3 and A2 sized photos of various details, including finishing and the servicing of a Tourbillon Pour le Merite. Bvlgari Octo Roma Central Tourbillon Papillon (hands-on)
Part of the novelties for the Geneva Watch Days 2021, Bvlgari revisits its magnificent Papillon Tourbillon with jumping hours, patented Papillon (butterfly) minutes and central tourbillon in an Octo Roma case. Introduced in 2015, Bvlgari combined Daniel Roth's innovative “butterfly” time display complication with a spectacular central flying tourbillon to create the Papillon Tourbillon. Smaller than the first 45mm model, the new 41mm Papillon sheds its distinctive Daniel Roth design cues and flaunts an equally impressive Octo Roma case.Brief backgroundIntent on upping its horological game, the Bvlgari Group acquired two heavyweight names in high-end watchmaking in 2000: Gerald Genta and Daniel Roth. This acquisition was instrumental in laying the foundations for the development of the superb and successful Octo Finissimo collection and its impressive series of horological world records. Although Roth left the following year, Bvlgari inherited his forceful designs and techni
IWC Mark XII Saab Limited Edition on the Day that Saab Starts Production Again - Monochrome Watches
When I wrote about the IWC Mark XII Saab ‘Mellow Yellow’ a few years ago, nobody could have suspected that Saab would start up production again. Well, today they started up production in the Saab factories in Trollh?ttan, Sweden. As an avid Saab driver, this makes a perfectly good reason to celebrate this with my own IWC Mark XII Saab.As an avid Saab driver – I’ve owned quite a few 900 classics and several 9-3’s – I couldn’t resist when I saw a used IWC Mark XII Saab for sale, earlier this year. I had actually been looking for one for several years, but as these things go, available budget and a good one, complete with all boxes and papers, for sale, somehow never “aligned”. As I previously wrote, that watch could well become the only Saab that holds its value and when looking at today’s market prices it looks like my prediction is still correct. It featured the very clever and patented ExoTourbillon that used to be exclusive for the ultra high-end Villeret 1858 collection, and finally found its way into the rest of the collection. To celebrate the 110th anniversary, Montblanc developed a robust dress watch that features this magnificent ExoTourbillon, and it is immediately the most affordable tourbillon watch on the market. Hands-On Tudor Pelagos 39 25407N No-Date Dive Watch (Specs & Price)
If the Black Bay is often seen as the cornerstone model of the brand – which it is in reality – Tudor has more to offer in the field of dive watches. In fact, the real diver in the collection is named Pelagos, a robust 500m titanium watch with a 42mm case and all the necessary equipment for saturation diving. A tool that pro divers have praised for a while already. Recently, Tudor has introduced a rather specific edition of the Pelagos, made together with the French Marine Nationale, the Pelagos FXD… an even focused edition made for military divers. And now comes this, a more versatile, less rugged, more “urban” edition of this watch that doesn’t look its characteristic design, but offers a less hardcore approach. Here’s a first look at the new Tudor Pelagos 39.So what’s the idea behind this new edition, in terms of positioning? Looking at the classics, there’s basically the two original emblamatic models, the 41mm Black Bay and the
