Hands-On: Some Thoughts About the IWC Big Pilot QP Top Gun Lake Tahoe
Approaching a hands-on article about a watch can take various angles, and one exciting perspective is to envision how a newcomer to the watch scene might react to a timepiece and what questions might arise during their exploration of the product. Let’s explore this approach as we delve into the mighty IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Lake Tahoe (what a name…), presented by the Schaffhausen-based brand in 2023.Imagine being entirely unfamiliar with IWC and its collections as you encounter a 46.5mm diameter, 15.5mm height watch encased in white ceramic featuring a substantial steel diamond-shaped ribbed crown. Despite its size, you’re surprised by its lightweight feel. On the matte black dial, you notice perpetual calendar indications inspired by flight instruments, complete with aeroplane images. You flip the watch over, and the sapphire crystal reveals the mechanism; you move the watch to playfully interact with the cut-out rotor adorned with the
Introducing IWC Portofino Chronograph 39 Laureus IW391408 (Price)
For many fans of IWC Schaffhausen, size – big size – is an important issue, so it’s not surprising that the XXL 46mm Big Pilot is considered one of the brand’s flagship models. Realising that not everybody can pull off a 46mm wristwatch, IWC decided to offer the Big Pilot in a smaller 43mm case size last year. In a similar move, IWC revisited its vintage-inspired Portofino Chronograph in 2021, offering a new 39mm diameter. One of IWC’s dressier collections, the Portofino is named after the picturesque Italian fishing village on the Amalfi coast frequented by jet-setters. Following its debut in 1984, it was revamped with much fanfare in 2014 and today offers a selection of elegant, classically styled watches. The IWC Portofino chronograph, initially available in a 42mm case size, was revisited last year in a smaller 39mm diameter. Favorite because this watch certainly best represents what a RM watch should be – without considering some totally crazy editions, like the Nadal watches. This watch is sporty, it has a chronograph, its design is bold and at the same time, it features impressive complications and technicality. The RM

However, by the mid-1970s, and like most other manufactures of mechanical watches, Heuer was having a tough time with the inv
Recap: The Best GMT and Travel Watches of Watches and Wonders 2025
We, at MONOCHROME, have long been strong advocates of the GMT, Worldtimer and Dual-Time complications. Why? Simply because when rightfully implemented, these additional features make some of the most practical watches possible – and we’re talking real-life practicality here, not an equation of time that no one has ever really understood (sorry, I had to say it…) And I can tell you that we were happy to see that brands during Watches and Wonders 2025 and the Geneva Watch Week came fully loaded, with an array of GMT and Travel watches. Here are some of the best we’ve seen – with one important?exclusion, the Bovet Recital 30 (an absolutely brilliant watch) that we’ll feature in another selection.?Armin Strom Dual Time GMT Resonance Manufacture SteelLet’s start with the most complex watch on the list (thanks only to the alphabetical order…), which is much more than just its dual-time complication.
