A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Outsize Date (SIHH 2018) - Monochrome Watches
To me, one of the true marks of a great watch manufacturer is the ability to make interesting and desirable timepieces across a range of price points. Unfortunately, few brands seem to be able to achieve this with any consistency. There are exceptions of course, and A. Lange & Sohne is most certainly one of them. Proving my point is the new Saxonia Outsize Date, which was officially launched last month at SIHH 2018. We managed to spend a bit of hands-on time with the watch and can confirm it is as nice on the wrist as it looks in the photos. We've already written about the technical details of the Saxonia Outsize Date in an earlier article, which you can read here. We'll cover some of those details again briefly, but the main focus of this hands-on article is to give you an idea of what the watch is actually like in the metal. In terms of positioning, this watch is somewhat reminiscent of the Langematik Sax-O-Mat with Date, which existed in the Saxonia collection before the range wa
Introducing: IWC Pilot Mark XX Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team
It’s only January, and yet the upcoming 2025 Formula One season is already in the starting blocks. We had the recent announcement of a new official timekeeper, and there are watch-related things to be expected on this side soon. But the first to kick off the F1 watch game this year is IWC, which presents a watch that unsurprisingly looks familiar. Indeed, while being a time-and-date watch, it relies on the same design cues as the Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 Edition Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. Except that now we’re looking at a titanium Mark XX version.?We’ve seen many AMG-themed watches in all the years that the team has been sponsored by IWC. Also, we have to count the dozens of special watches made with pilot Lewis Hamilton, even though this has come to an end, as he’ll soon be driving for Ferrari. But the watch we’re looking at today, just like the chronograph edition of 2022, is a bit special as it’s a so-called team watch and not a watch for
@winewhiskywatches and his IWC Safari Big Pilot (AKA the Tribute to 5002) - Monochrome Watches
When Chris Granger-Herr, the CEO of IWC, posted a photo of himself wearing the prototype for this updated version of the original 5002-generation Big Pilot in matte titanium while on his African Safari, collectors took notice. Shortly after, IWC announced a limited edition of 100 watches, which sold out almost instantly via Instagram (despite a six-month wait for them to be built). The watch was immediately nicknamed the Safari Big Pilot, while IWC officially named it the Tribute to 5002. Today we’re talking to @winewhiskywatches about his IWC Big Pilot Tribute to 5002 ref. IW501007 AKA the “Safari” Big Pilot.?When Chris Grainger-Herr posted that picture on Instagram, I was travelling from the Netherlands to Switzerland to film one the MONOCHROME videos. So by the time I found out about this particular “Safari” Big Pilot, it was long sold out and that was that. So when I saw that @winewhiskywatches (who recently told us about his Armin Strom Resonance) own
Introducing: Indie Brand Havid Nagan Releases its elegant Classic One
Havid Nagan (from the Armenian word havidenagan, meaning eternal) is a relatively new name in the independent watchmaking scene and the brainchild of California-based entrepreneur Aren Bazerkanian. The brand started with the inaugural HN00 series, a cushion-shaped titanium watch with guilloche-like dials powered by Schwartz-Etienne micro-rotor movements. Then came the HN01 Lucine Moon Phase. Things didn’t go as planned, and in Bazerkanian’s words, production was problematic. Having learned from this experience, Havid Nagan has now moved to a new phase. Bolstered by new manufacturing partners – with an openly stated etablissage concept – the brand releases a new elegant dress watch that packs a lot of arguments: the Havid Nagan Classic One.Before we take a closer look at the new Havid Nagan Classic One, let’s talk quickly about the brand and its evolution. “After the manufacturing issue I had with the HN01 Lucine project,” says Aren Bazerkanian,
