Wilhelm Schmid, 10 Year at the Helm at A. Lange & Sohne - Monochrome Watches

Lange & Sohne, the pinnacle of German watchmaking. With a background in sales and a strong passion for mechanics, it seemed like a match made in heaven. Wilhelm Schmid's past ten years at Lange were during a pretty turbulent period. It already started in the aftermath of the massive global recession that started in 2008, now the corona pandemic that has a huge influence on the watch industry, the opening of the new manufacture, and of course the sad passing of Walter Lange.?Frank Geelen, MONOCHROME Watches – How was it, ten years ago, to arrive in Glashutte at a watch company, after a long career at BMW in sunny South Africa? The best stories from our Petrolhead Corner this year.
Our weekly episodic column known as the Petrolhead Corner started from the shared passion between several members of the MONOCHROME editorial team for all things car- and bike-related. We wanted to offer something else during the weekend, as a bit of a break from watches. This can be anything from classic cars and motorcycles to iconic drivers, restomods, or modern sports- and supercars. And with a new story coming at you every week, there’s plenty to look back on! So, just as we do with watches, we’ve gone over every instalment of the Petrolhead Corner to serve you up what we think are the coolest stories of the year!the lightweight Kamm 912CJust a couple of weeks ago we brought to you the Kamm 912C, a restomod from Hungary based on one of the most overlooked Porsche sportscars out there. Not a true 911 but a 912 instead (big difference!), this car was praised for its lower weight and better handling compared to its bigger and more popular brother. Once positioned to sit b
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin 26586IP.OO.1240IP.01 - Review, Specs & Price
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, which started its life as a prototype watch named RD#2, is one of these watches that look so right. It is at once a superb design object and a highly engineered piece of horological ingenuity. Of course, it is the thinnest perpetual calendar wristwatch. But interestingly, its development was not initiated to break any record. The idea was simply to design a perpetual calendar Royal Oak that could easily slip under any cuffIt is not a surprise to see Audemars Piguet presenting the thinnest perpetual calendar wristwatch. Ultra-thin watches and perpetual calendars are both parts of Audemars Piguet's tradition. The brand claims to have presented the first perpetual wristwatch as early as 1955. The Royal Oak itself has been available with a perpetual calendar complication for some years, including the current versions. But Genta's iconic design isn't the most appropriate candidate for breaking a thinness record –

Hands-On Seiko 5 Sports Time Sonar SRPJ45 and SRPJ47
It’s fair to say that the Seiko 5 Sports collection is one of the most versatile mechanical watch lineups in its price range. If on top of versatility, we tally the factor of manufacture-made movements, as well as the overall quality the Japanese brand is known for, the Seiko 5 Sports collection is practically unbeatable. A potential contender could be the Swatch Sistem51 – with even lower prices – but without the range and resilience of a Seiko 5 Sports model. And some new “Time Sonar” models have recently been released… Sounds familiar? Yes, but these new references SRPJ45 and SRPJ47 are a bit different and non-limited.In addition to the traditional configuration and Field models, we’ve seen the Seiko 5 Sports watch emblazoned with the motorcycle livery of the Honda Super Cub.
