The absolutely stunning Thomas Prescher Nemo Repeater
It has been quiet regarding the work of independent master watchmaker Thomas Prescher, but things are about to kick into a higher gear. Following the news Thomas Prescher will be attending the Festival of Time event in Waterford, Ireland, we learned there's a new unique piece to be presented there for the first time. One that took three years to complete, primarily due to the Covid-19 pandemic but also due to the fact it uses a restored pocket watch movement from the year 1900! Not the easiest to work with, as it turned out, but Thomas Prescher is finally revealing this bespoke Nemo Repeater to the world.Thomas Prescher is not just any watchmaker, but an independent master watchmaker with 20 years of experience under his eponymous brand. Watchmaking has always been of interest to Thomas, and after finishing a six-year stint in the German Navy, it was due time to turn passion into a profession. He spent a year collecting dozens of clocks and watches to learn how to dismantle, repair and
Introducing J.N. Shapiro Infinity Tantalum Limited Edition (Specs & Price)
Josh Shapiro, the man behind J.N. Shapiro Watches, is unique in many aspects. As we’ve explained in an interview with the young independent watchmaker, he’s one of the only to exercise this fine art in California – his workshop is located in Inglewood to be precise. With the idea to produce as much as possible in-house, and thus on US soil, he has recently created a highly attractive collection of elegant, high-end watches named the Infinity series. Based on this design, J.N. Shapiro now launches the Infinity Tantalum Limited Edition, with the first tantalum case produced outside of Switzerland and three different (and attractive) dial options.?Independent watchmaking has recently gained incredible traction and this gave ideas to many young and talented watchmakers, with most of them trying to bring something personal in their creations. For Josh Shapiro, it’s about his work on materials and crafting habillage pieces, all done in a traditional and ultra-detailed
Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1R-001 - Rose Gold Chocolate Dial - Hands-On with Live Photos - Monochrome-Watches
Yesterday, we showed certainly the most surprising watch from Patek Philippe since years, the?Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Ref. 5524. Today, there is another novelty that you might find extremely classical and iconic, a new edition of the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711. However, try to remember how this watch broke Patek’s codes, back in 1976. It was a total unexpected watch that now is an absolute classic. For Baselworld 2015, it now comes in rose gold with a (stunning) chocolate brown dial. The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 ‘Jumbo’ is one?of the most refined sports watch around and, together with the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, is a proper icon. Not only they share the same designer – Gerald Genta – but also the same spirit. The Patek however has to be seen as slightly more refined and discreet… unless it comes in a full gold package. Usually we, at Monochrome-Watches, are not the biggest fans of gold watches – at least of gold sports watches. Howe
Chris Grainger-Herr on the New 2020 IWC Portugieser Collection, the Big Pilot Safari and COVID-19 (warning: long read) - Monochrome Watches
I guess I need to start this interview with an apology. Sorry, this interview is long, very long, comprising close to 3,000 words. However, the conversation with Chris Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen, was great and there was just so much to say about the new Portugiesers. We had the conversation two weeks ago, in the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown. Chris was in his office, in Schaffhausen, and we had a zoom meeting. It’s weird, not sitting together for a talk, but it is what it is and I guess for the foreseeable future this is going to be the new normal.?Personally I am quite pleased with the new Portugieser line-up; there’s a lot to like! Of course, I’d love to put the new Portugieser Perpetual Calendar on the wrist and see/feel how the 42mm diameter works with such a classic beauty. And the Portugieser Automatic 40 with its small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock looks fabulous and I’m curious how the old Portugieser and the new one with in-house move
First Look: Manufacture Fleury Revives the Legendary Lemania 2310 Chronograph Movement
Social media can be a wonderful tool. When we discovered the initial pictures of the new chronograph movement from Manufacture Fleury a few weeks back, it immediately tickled our interest. Now that the dust from Watches and Wonders has settled, we have contacted Jean-Marc Fleury to find out more A few days later, we hit the road to the outskirts of Geneva to visit his workshop and get our hands on several prototypes of his Chronograph FXR-4.
