Hands-On A. Lange & Sohne 1815 Rattrapante Platinum
The rattrapante chronograph, also known as split-seconds or Doppel chronograph, is often regarded as one of the most sophisticated horological complications, and a must-have in high-end watch collections. As a top-tier watchmaker, A. Lange & Sohne isn’t only familiar with the complication, it somehow masters it, with a double-rattrapante – the Double Split – and even a triple-rattrapante – the Triple Split (respectively able to split the seconds and minutes, or the seconds, minutes and hours). Two years ago, the Saxon manufacture came with its first stand-alone split-seconds chronograph, the 1815 Rattrapante Honey Gold. And sometimes, less is more, this watch being one of the absolute best of the brand. This watch fully focused on the eponymous complication returns this year in a classic limited edition, the A. Lange & Sohne 1815 Rattrapante Platinum.?A. Lange & Sohne and the ChronographThe chronograph complication and the rattrapante function are de
Buying Guide: Six Watches That Double Down On The Balance Wheel
Each and every we serve up a selection of watches based on a common feature in our Buying Guide, and this week is no different. But instead of looking at elements such as colour, size, material or even type of watch (dress, sports, pilot, diver, etc.), we take a more technical approach for this instalment. Harnessing the pioneering spirit and groundbreaking work of historic watchmakers such as Abraham Louis Breguet, Ferdinand Berthoud and Antide Janvier, or even the principle of resonance first discovered by Christiaan Huygens, each of these six watches double-down on the balance wheel. Instead of settling for just one regulating organ, they feature two of them which work together to improve accuracy and stability.?Czapek Place Vend?me CompliciteFor the Geneva Watch Days 2023, Czapek revealed its next watchmaking chapter, the brilliant Place Vend?me Complicite. Developed in collaboration with Bernhard Lederer, the Complicite uses two regulators coupled with a miniature differential. Th
Hublot Classic Fusion 40 Years Anniversary Collection - Review, Price
In Stephen Hawking's universe, the Big Bang signals the beginning of time; in the watchmaking world, it is a best-selling Hublot watch.?Hublot has always been a brand that likes to make noise, a lot of noise. It is loud, explosive and disruptive; a brand that you either love or hate. Although the Big Bang is very much a 21st-century creation, it owes its character to a watch released in 1980. You could say that Carlo Crocco's Hublot watch jump-started the concept of fusion, an unorthodox but refreshing combination of materials that got the brand noticed. And as this watch turns a respectable age in 2020, the brand releases the new Hublot Classic Fusion 40 Years Anniversary collection.Carlo Crocco's unconventional marriage of materialsItalian entrepreneur Carlo Crocco founded the brand MDM Geneve and, after three years of research, launched the Hublot (French for ‘porthole’) at Baselworld in 1980. An unconventional 37mm yellow gold watch with a black rubber strap, this shock
The Petrolhead Corner - The James Bond Edition - The Best, The Forgotten and The Future Cars Driven By Secret Agent 007
Looking at a James Bond movie is, for men, like a kid going to the amusement park… Obviously, everything a man can dream of is there (I know, this will sound a bit simple-minded, if not almost misogynist…), and that includes the nice girls, the fine liquors, the elegant wardrobe, the great locations, the cool watches, the action and… an impressive selection of cars. Some iconic, some to forget, some clearly under-appreciated. So, in our latest episode of this fuel-infused column, The Petrolhead Corner, we take a look at the best, the forgotten and the future cars driven by the world’s most famous secret agent, James Bond a.k.a. 007. Rado True Square Automatic Collection 2020 (Specs & Price)
Rado launched the iconic square Ceramica in 1990, an all-ceramic watch with an integrated bracelet that ushered in the brand's extensive use of the material. In 1993, the Sintra introduced cermet, a stronger and more advanced titanium-based ceramic. High-tech ceramics have become a mainstay for Rado and really differentiate the brand, while square cases are a signature design element introduced a half-century ago with watches like the scratchproof DiaStar, although it wasn't fully embraced until the 1986 ceramic Integral. The latest Rado True Square Automatic Collection combines this square aesthetic with the brand’s new high-tech ceramic injected-monobloc technology, an industry first.?The True Square collection has 15 new references and comes in a few flavours, including the Open Heart skeletonised series and more conventional standard models, and case/bracelet colours in black, white and plasma (silvery grey). Men's cases are a somewhat reserved 38mm in width and 9.7mm (Open H
