This is it, the 2019 edition of the GPHG, known as the Oscars of the watchmaking industry, has come to a close and the prize for the best watch of the year, also known as the?Aiguille d'Or, has been awarded. This year again, the Grand Prix aims at rewarding creativity, innovation and haute horlogerie – in short, the best the watchmaking industry can produce. So here’s the best watch of 2019, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin (based on the RD#2 concept), reviewed here, also known as the thinnest perpetual calendar watch ever – as well as all the other prize winners of the GPHG 2019.Quick takeAs often, the Grand Prix tends, in the normal categories, to award some impressively complicated (and expensive) watches. While last year independent watchmakers were at centre stage, this year it appears tha
VIDEO - The 2019 Bvlgari collection explained by CEO Jean-Christophe Babin
The reputation of Bvlgari as a watchmaker is no longer under discussion. For the past five years, the brand has been hyperactive, especially in the field of ultra-thin pieces – which, even though we’re talking miniaturisation and not complications, certainly is one of the most complex fields of expertise in this industry. Today, thanks to this interview with CEO?Jean-Christophe Babin, we have the opportunity to offer you a preview of the 2019 collection that Bvlgari will introduce throughout the year. And once again, there are some pretty interesting things to discover.First, ultra-thin, which has been the main field of action for the brand recently, is still at the forefront but combined with the use of exotic materials – something that Bvlgari was famous for in the jewellery sector and that is now applied to watchmaking. As a result, in 2019 Bvlgari presents the ultra-ultra-thin Octo Finissimo Automatic Tourbillon (the thinnest automatic watch in the world…) i
MB&F HM5 CM CarbonMacrolon - The 1970s inspired Horological Machine is back in black (specs and price) - Monochrome-Watches
The Lamborghini Muira MB&F Horological Machine 5 or HM5?is back on the road. If you’re not too young or if you’re fond of an era that could seem very strange to teenagers (yes, we’re talking about the 1970s) the shape of the HM5 should be familiar to you. Apart from the steampunk-inspired Legacy Machine 101 recently revealed, the HM5 is based on one of Max Busser’s favorite theme, the?futuristic-looking icons of the 1970's. And the MB&F HM5 is now available in black. But don’t be?wrong, it’s not just another PVD?coated edition but a brand new and innovative material. The MB&F HM5 was until now available in two editions: the first introduced with a Zirconium case and a second one with a Red Gold and Titanium case. Now the the 1970s inspired Horological Machine is back in black. Ok, you’ll expect just a new colour or maybe the use of a titanium PVD coated case. But that would underestimate Max and his friends. The black case is made wi
Hands-On - Grand Seiko Elegance Spring SBGW283 Summer SBGW285
Like most Japanese folk, Grand Seiko has always displayed a close affinity to nature. Dials inspired by the changing seasons,?the texture of tree bark, the twinkling stars of a?night sky or even the delicate colour of cherry blossom petals, are recurring themes at Grand Seiko. The setting of Grand Seiko's manufacture is intentionally studied to inspire the takumi (master artisans), and most Grand Seiko mechanical watches (not Spring Drive calibres) are crafted in the Shizukuishi Studio located in a forest in the Iwate prefecture, home to the imposing Mount Iwate. Two new references with textured dials inspired by nature, the SBGW283 Spring and the SBGW285 Summer, join Grand Seiko's Elegance collection. A compact, elegant and disarmingly simple hand-wound, time-only watch, the SBGWXXX series is packed with refined details that abide by the tenets laid down in the Grammar of Design by Grand Seiko designer TaroTanaka.Subtle TransitionsUnlike the Western world's somewhat arbitrary four sea
