Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin 16202BA - Hands-On, Price
Last week, and you hardly can have missed it, Audemars Piguet presented a whole new collection of Royal Oak watches celebrating the 50th anniversary of the icon born in 1972. Among a dozen updated models, there was, of course, the brand new Jumbo, the reference 16202, which we’ve extensively reviewed in this article, in its all-time classic stainless steel version. But there’s more to the new Royal Oak Jumbo than just the steel model. In fact, AP has presented 4 different versions, including the one you see here, a bold and loud yellow gold watch with a smoked yellow-gold-toned dial. One of the brands I have been following closely since I joined MONOCHROME is the Swedish brand Gustafsson & Sjogren, or GoS in short. Have we lost the plot? Are we abandoning watches? No, of course not, but this time around the Petrolhead Corner is serving up something very special. Yet with us, watches are never far away as we will be going over the connection between Porsche, the car manufacturer and Porsche Design. How? By looking at two benchmark products as examples; the mad Porsche 911 Dakar, and a matching special edition of the Porsche Design Chronograph 1. We put the car through its paces both on and off-road, and it was mad fun! Oh, and the watch too of course, as that’s kind of our thing after all. So sit back, relax and enjoy the show!Now, before I start rambling on about Porsche, its 911 Dakar, the Porsche Design watches and so on, I want to make one thing very clear. Vacheron Constantin Historique American 1921 - driver's watch - Monochrome Watches
Vacheron Constantin released a re-issue of a 1920’s watch at SIHH 2009. The Historique American 1921 is probably one of the most beautiful watches Vacheron Constantin ever made, but it also has something weird…In 1919 Vacheron Constantin made a watch in a cushion shape case with a crown placed at the upper left corner, at the 11 ‘o clock position. Usually the crown is at right side of the case mostly at the 3 ‘o clock position, sometimes at the 4 ‘o clock position. Some watches even place the crown at the left side, at the 9 ‘o clock position. The crown position Vacheron Constantin has chosen is very remarkable. I believe this was a so called driver’s watch.Due to the crown position and the use of a conventional movement from a pocket watch, the dial is turned slightly so the 12 ‘o clock position is where the crown is, at the upper left corner. If the watch was worn on the right wrist, it was possible to read time while keeping your hands
