Introducing: New Red Gold Versions of the Updated IWC Portugieser 40 and 42 Automatic
2024 was all about the Portugieser at IWC, the brand’s most classic and elegant collection. Of course, the star of the show was the Portugieser Eternal Calendar, a secular calendar watch that made it to our list of the best watches of the year. There were many more updated versions of this emblematic watch launched at W&W 2024, including superb colours for the chronograph, updated QPs and revised editions of the Portugieser 40 and 42 Automatic. In both cases, a classic combination was missing: a gold case and silver dial, which is the maximum expression of timelessness. Problem solved as IWC presents red gold versions of the 40mm IW3584 and the 42mm IW5017 of its icon.?The update that these models underwent in April 2024 was subtle, to say the least. We were looking at slightly retouched cases with thinner middle cases combined with box-shaped crystals – front and back – adding to the slenderness of these models. For the Portugieser 40 Automatic, a watch first lau
Doxa SUB 300 Searambler 'Silver Lung' Reissue (Specs & Price)
In 2017, Doxa introduced the SUB 300 ‘Black Lung’, a reissue of a rare 1967 prototype, an iconic watch amongst the diving community made for Aqua-Lung. Unfortunately for some (and?fortunately for Doxa), this limited edition was the?fastest-selling model of the brand ever… Today, there’s one more chance to get your hands on another ultra-cool version, this time in the long-running signature Silver ‘Searambler’ style. Meet the?Doxa SUB 300 Searambler ‘Silver Lung’ Reissue – and again, you will need to be fast.Historical BackgroundDoxa, an independent Swiss watchmaker, entered the game of the professional/purpose-built dive watch later than many of its competitors – 1953 for Blanpain and , 1957 for Omega, and 1962 for Seiko. However, Doxa did it?with a watch that would make quite an impression: the SUB 300. While most of the competitors copied each other with watches that were obviously rather close in terms of technical solutio
First Look: Roger Dubuis Knights of the Round Table, the Omniscient Merlin Edition
Roger Dubuis, the “Hyper Horology brand” (as it calls itself), has embraced a Middle Ages myth since 2013 with the launch of its Knights of the Round Table series, crafting several metier d’art pieces since. The first edition featured 12 intricately engraved micro-sculptures of the legendary knights, their swords drawn and pointing towards the centre. Cast in gold, the knights served as hour indices on a dial resembling the green and white Winchester Round Table, made of hand-painted enamel for the first edition, while the second (2015) featured a black jade dial with detailed engravings and patination, and the 12 knights cast in bronze. The collection took an interesting turn with the release of the Knights of the Round Table III (2018). Here, while still static, the knights were sculpted with polygonal facets reminiscent of video game heroes and arranged around a table crafted from sculpted gold and translucent blue enamel.Later editions introduced a dynamic twist &
Panerai 2014 Chrono Collection Teaser Video - Monochrome Watches
With SIHH fast approaching, Panerai has released a teaser video for its 2014 Chrono Collection. ?Though we get a quick glimpse of the caseback, what is most intriguing is the day/date graphic for the beginning of SIHH, January 20. ?Does this mean that the new 2014 Chrono Collection will feature a day/date complication? ?If so, this complication would mean a ?departure from previous models and makes this video quite the teaser.A date complication fits easily on the tri-compax dial of the Luminor Chrono Daylight, but if a day/date is coming, will this mean a bi-compax dial? ?Are we going to see the?Panerai OP XII calibre, which is a modular chronograph calibre with a Valjoux 7753 base movement, or will we see a new in-house movement? ?Hand wound like the P.2006? ?Maybe an automatic like the P.9100 with flyback? ?Given that the video names a collection, meaning more than one chronograph, our interest is piqued to see a range of watches. ?Stay tuned. Horage Tourbillon 1, Most Accessible Swiss-Made Tourbillon (Specs & Price)
Just a few years ago, TAG Heuer shocked the industry with the Carrera Heuer-02T Chronograph, the “cheapest” Swiss tourbillon at the time. Just shy of CHF 15,000, nothing outside of the Asian market could touch it. Borrowing from the Carrera Heuer-01 case, it was sporty and quite controversial. Let's say a few Swiss giants weren't too pleased by the low price. Horage, a ten-year-old brand based in Biel, Switzerland, has now undercut TAG Heuer by almost CHF 8,000 with the Tourbillon 1. What is this sorcery, you ask? Let's take a closer look.?How is it possible to produce a Swiss-made flying tourbillon, with the quality expected from the watchmaking capital, for less than half of what TAG Heuer achieved? Technology, experience and ingenuity, coupled with a clever pre-order campaign. The watches are limited to pre-orders with no stock available afterwards, helping to optimize production while directly funding every piece made – a sort of souscription program. This exclusi
