Lange und Sohne Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar - Apotheosis of the SIHH 2012 - Monochrome Watches
Because of an incredibly busy schedule I didn’t have time to visit Lange und Sohne until the last day of the SIIH 2012. What I got to see wasn’t simply amazing, it was so much more than amazing. For me it was the apotheosis of the fair. The new Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar is a magnificent piece of horology, technically very complex and visually it shows the understated classic, elegance we know Lange und Sohne for. Do you see the resemblance with the Lange 1 Daymatic? The dilemma of Constant Force in Watchmaking - Monochrome Watches
Constant force is a holy grail of watchmaking and chronometry. The varying driving force delivered to the regulating organ of watches affects their rate, because balance wheels are not perfectly isochronous - isochronous means that the period of oscillation is independent of the amplitude of oscillation. Modern barrels and the Swiss lever escapement offer satisfactory regularity. Still, in their ongoing search for precision, watchmakers are showing renewed interest in taming power even further. Here is our technical guide to the complex concept of constant force. The barrel is the device that stores energy in a watch movement. It contains the mainspring coiled around the barrel arbor, which is put under tension to power the movement. The force delivered by the barrel is irregular. Strong torque is provided when it is fully wound, then it slowly wanes throughout the power reserve duration. This affects the rate of watches because balance wheels are not perfectly isochronous. The period o

Master watch maker Roger Smith recently released an open dial version of his Series 2. A perfect example of the very finest in British watchmaking! The first time I met Roger Smith was in 2007 and his speech for a group of collectors, totally opened my eyes for independent watchmaking. Before that speech I knew a bit, after the speech I was ‘infected’ and this made search for more information about independent watchmakers. For this collectors meeting, Roger brought his Series 2 for us to admire. But first a photo of his new masterpiece, the Series 2 Open Dial. Ad - Scroll to continue with article Based on his Series 2 (see photo below) Roger Smith made an open dial version to expose what British watchmaking is all about. Him being a student of the legendary George Daniels, inventor of the co-axial escapement now used by Omega, he learned how to make a

Let's take a closer look at the remarkable histories of both brands and how an open-road race in Mexico inspired their most emblematic products.Obsessed with speedBorn just 35 years apart, I very mu
