Introducing the IWC Portofino Midsize Collection and Three Portofino Automatics with Diamond-set Bezel (lots of live photos) - Monochrome Watches
At the Watches & Wonders fair that starts today in Hong Kong, IWC adds no less than 20 new models to the Portofino collection. There are seventeen new midsize models, all adorned with diamonds, and three new version of the 40mm Portofino Automatic, now in new 18K red or white gold and 72 diamonds set on the bezel. Most models come on beautiful hand-made leather Santoni straps, and two come on an extra fine Milanese mesh bracelet. And there are two models equipped with a second time zone and five with a moonphase. The Portofino collection just grew by 600%, from 4 models to 24. Last week we got an exclusive preview of the new Portofino models, before they were shipped to Hong Kong for the Watches & Wonders fair. This fair is becoming more and more important and we see more new models being presented especially for this fair, which is visited both by professionals as well as end-customers. Christiaan Knoop, IWC’s creative director, spoke to us about these new additions to t
Code 11.59 By Audemars Piguet Tourbillon Openworked Two-Tone - Monochrome Watches
Following the watches we’ve already presented for the charity auction Only Watch 2019, it is now time to look at Audemars Piguet’s contribution. In 2017, the Le Brassus-based brand presented a unique blue dial version of its full ceramic Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar for the fund-raising event. This year, the brand takes its latest and controversial creation and donates a unique two-tone model, the Code 11.59 By Audemars Piguet Tourbillon Openworked Unique Piece for Only Watch 2019.No introductions are needed: the Code 11.59 By Audemars Piguet was probably the most discussed and controversial collection of the SIHH 2019 following its launch. This collection, entirely new for Audemars, proposed a different approach to the brand’s concept, something to add to the bold, signature Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore ranges. Reactions were strong, but as we explained and showed, it is a watch that deserves to be seen in the metal to be understood. Ad - Scroll to con
A Complete Guide to the Regulating Organ - Monochrome Watches
The regulating organ of a watch is certainly amongst the most important parts. It is what defines the speed at which the watch will run – and because time is defined by rules, this speed has to be controlled with great care, in order to have the most accurate watch possible. The?regulating organ can take several forms, it can use several materials, it has been a field for innovations since watchmaking exists and overall, it is a crucial element of a watch. Here is a guide to understand the?regulating organ of a watch. The balance wheel and hairspring represent the regulating organ of the watch. The balance wheel works in conjunction with the escapement. The escapement gives impulses to the balance wheel. In return it is regulated by the balance. The oscillations of the balance wheel regulate the flow of time and is therefore critical for the accuracy of the watch. Each swing of the balance allows the gear train to advance a set amount. Its role is similar to that of a pendulum in
Patek Philippe Chronograph Annual Calendar Steel 5905/1A
The annual calendar chronograph is one of the most fascinating yet rarest combinations in the industry, as we’ve experienced in this in-depth article. And one brand in particular does it better than the rest of the bunch, and that is Patek Philippe. For a good reason, since the brand invented the annual calendar function back in 1996. Now, there’s a rather large collection of watches using this unusual combination, and specifically the 5905 is often regarded as the most attractive model. Today, Patek launches a new, surprisingly sporty version of this watch with a steel case, a steel bracelet and an olive green dial, with the new Chronograph Annual Calendar 5905/1A.While on paper we’re certainly talking about just a new version of a watch that has been in production for some years now, this new iteration of the large Chronograph Annual Calendar, the reference 5905/1A, comes with some rather interesting attributes. Yes… steel case and bracelet, not something that
Introducing: Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Enamel
Jaeger-LeCoultre‘s Master Thin collection is home to sophisticated, understated, ultra-thin dress watches ranging from time-and-date to moon phase models and more complex proposals like tourbillons and perpetual calendars. Offered with understated beige or sunray decorated dials, JLC introduced metiers d’art dials to the collection at the end of 2018. First appearing on the Master Ultra Thin Moon model, the hand-guilloche dial added a further touch of sophistication, making its way over to the more complicated models. The latest hand-guilloche dial to emerge from JLC’s Metiers Rares Atelier appears on the pink gold Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Enamel model in a beguiling new shade of blue.Capturing the light with every movement of the wrist, the hand-guilloche pattern on the dial is composed of 180 sun rays radiating from the dial’s centre to the edges. Ensuring that every ray is absolutely straight, evenly spaced and aligned, the master guillocheur requires gre
