Hands-On - Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding 37mm 15550ST
Refreshing a watch that has marked the identity of a brand for fifty years, which saved the brand from the onslaught of quartz in the 1970s and gave birth to an entirely new genre known as the luxury sports watch, is a delicate balancing act. One too many tweaks and you risk altering its gene pool; no change at all, and you perpetuate a dinosaur. As our readers know, Gerald Genta’s 1972 luxury stainless steel sports watch, christened the Royal Oak, marked a before and after in watch design, spawning one of the most competitive segments in the watch market today. Although the stars of the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the Royal Oak were the?RO Jumbo Extra-Thin 16202 and the Openworked 16204, the brand announced that the range of permanent Royal Oaks would also be updated throughout 2022, which includes this RO Selfwinding 37mm with a new automatic movement. As you will discover, the facelift in no way alters the physiognomy of Genta’s dynamic design but refines its silhou

One Lunar Year With A Seiko SBDC007 - Monochrome Watches
In Kurt Vonnegut's novel, Cat's Cradle he wrote of a mysterious substance Ice 9 that could in fact FREEZE any organic substance it came into contact with! A single molecule of Ice 9 could have set off a chain reaction of frosty crystallization that would have ended all life on Earth! When I bought my Seiko SBDC007 it had a similar effect on my entire collection! It froze them all in their tracks and rendered them useless! At the outset of the lunar year denoting the time of the Dragon my family boarded a Boeing 777 bound for Singapore. (China can be a bit TOO festive during Chinese New Years! (Read as - LOUD!!!)). In Singapore we went about the task of sourcing out the essentials: shelter - our usual room overlooking the marina did the trick! Food - there are enough celebrity chefs in the Mall alone to keep us nicely fed. Clothing - shorts and t-shirts please - even in February, Singapore is bloody hot! With the needs' covered we set out to cover the wants'! My wife and daughter are eas
Baltic MR01 Salmon Accessible Calatrava-style Micro Rotor Watch Review
Baltic, the young and fresh indie watchmaker from France, has managed in a few years to make a name for itself with a collection of superbly designed, neo-retro watches with relatively accessible prices. It all started with a duo of 1940s-inspired watches with a slightly elegant touch. Then, the brand moved into sportier territories with several editions of the Aquascaphe. Today, Etienne Malec (the founder) goes back to one of his favourite types of watches, the so-called Calatrava style, with an elegant and compact micro-rotor watch that made quite an impression on us. Great look, gorgeous dial and even mechanical pleasures; let’s have a closer look at this new Baltic MR01.As a reminder, here’s what we explained about Baltic Watches in our in-depth article on the inaugural Aquascaphe Diver: Baltic Watches is the brainchild of Etienne Malec, a young Frenchman who has inherited his father’s passion for watches - something he shared with us already, some years ago. An a
FOUND: a Heuer Autavia with Prototype Orange Dial - Extremely Rare, possibly Unique - Monochrome Watches
Rarer than hen’s teeth? This Orange dial Heuer Autavia is indeed extremely rare, if not unique. Experts are still debating on the exact details, however they seem to agree we’re dealing with a genuine Heuer Autavia ref. 1163, with a high-beat calibre 11 movement, a prototype orange dial, and hands from a Heuer Carrera ref. 1153. And it seems to be authentic. You want to own it? That’s possible! This rare prototype Heuer Autavia was offered for sale at the Chronocentric forums (click here), which is a forum for vintage (Heuer) chronograph collectors. Of course we immediately mailed the seller, who send us some additional images and told us he bought the watch, as is, at a reputable watch dealer in Munich, Germany. That would make sense, because according to several experts who commented online, a few orange Autavia dials surfaced at a German watch dealer some years ago. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
