Industry Omega Raises its Warranty to 5 Years on all Watches
Following the trend for more services, more clarity and more security, Omega just announced it will now offer a 5-year warranty on all newly purchased watches – with immediate effect. Until now, the Omega warranty was different depending on the type of products – up to 4 years on Master Chronometer watches, compared to a traditional 2-year warranty in the industry (which was the warranty offered, as of now, on the Speedmaster Moonwatch, for instance). In 2015, Omega raised industry standards with the introduction of the Master Chronometer certification. Thanks to this new process, each watch is tested enduring stringent tests approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). These replicate real-life conditions and in particular, watches must demonstrate resistance to magnetic fields of 15,000 Gauss (to find out more, you can watch our in-depth video about the Master Chronometer certification process here). The brand inaugurated its new manufacture in Biel just o
Ferdinand Berthoud Chronometre FB 1L, An Instrument of Astronomical Complexity - Monochrome Watches
The latest “experimental collection” unveiled by Ferdinand Berthoud during Baselworld 2019 unites the findings of two pivotal scientific minds of the Enlightenment. Closer in nature to an instrument than a watch, two limited editions of 10 pieces celebrate the genius of pioneers Ferdinand Berthoud and Jean-Charles de Borda, men whose discoveries and quest for chronometric precision and the calculation of longitude changed the course of history and gave France's Navy sway of the seven seas. This year, the Chronometre FB 1 with its in-house tourbillon movement and constant force escapement incorporates the age and phases of the Moon to become the Chronometre FB 1L (L for lune, French for moon). A fusion of astronomic and chronometric precision, the FB 1L represents the breakthrough scientific projects that helped determine longitude at sea with ever-increasing accuracy three centuries ago.Expanding the Chronometre FB 1 FleetJust ahead of the Baselworld launch, Brice introduce
Longines Heritage Military Marine Nationale - Review, Price
Longines' highly successful Heritage collection welcomes another golden oldie. The latest model reporting for duty in the Heritage collection is the 5774 model created by Longines exclusively for the French Navy in 1947, designed for shallow diving missions. The Heritage Military Marine Nationale captures the look and feel of the original Longines 5774 convincingly, underscored by the simple, legible dial and no-frills, robust nature of the piece. Slightly larger in size than the original to cater to contemporary tastes, the re-edition is not a 1:1 replica, but it's pretty close.Heritage Collection – The real dealThe popularity of vintage-inspired watches shows no signs of abating, and countless brands have jumped on the bandwagon. Longines has an entire collection dedicated to this genre and with its long history (founded in 1832) has no shortage of historic models to inspire recreations. Taking a stroll through the Heritage collection – with dozens visible at the brand
Moon Landing 50 - The Other Watch of Apollo 11, The Mission Control Heuer Stopwatch
We know all about the Omega Speedmaster ‘Moonwatch’, as the first wristwatch on the Moon, which cemented its place in the history when the Apollo 11 mission successfully landed on the Lunar surface on the wrist of Buzz Aldrin. But there’s a little-known Heuer stopwatch that played a small but very important role when Neil Armstrong was piloting the lunar module Eagle to land on the Moon. The iconic image of Buzz Aldrin on the lunar surface, his Speedmaster Professional around his wrist… but this wasn’t the only timepiece involved in mission Apollo 11.Since the initial landing site was too cavernous and rocky, Armstrong had to manoeuvre the Eagle to a different location. This, in return, caused extra fuel to be used and it had reached critical levels. In the event of all fuel being used without a safe landing, an abort would have been necessary and thus no landing on the Moon would have been possible.Image from Mission Control – one of the flight contr
Patek Philippe Ref. 5235 Annual Calendar Regulator - Monochrome Watches
Patek Philippe’s new Ref. 5235 Annual Calendar Regulator embodies a number of novel facets never before featured in the manufacture’s collection. It is the first Patek Philippe wristwatch with a regulator dial! The Patek Philippe Ref. 5235 Annual Calendar Regulator features a dial with an unusual arrangement - large sweep minute hand combined with subsidiary hours at 12 o’clock and subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock.?Free-standing precision pendulum clocks with regulator arrangement kept the precise time in watchmaking workshops and observatories, for more than 200 years,?until they were finally superseded by quartz- and radio-controlled reference instruments. When adjusting their timepieces, watchmakers needed an unobstructed view of the seconds hand, which is why the hour display was moved to an off-center location where it would not sweep over and thus partially cover the seconds dial for several hours in the course of a day.
