Hands-On IWC Portugieser Chronograph Blue Panda IW371620
If there’s one watch that can be called a classic at IWC, it has to be the Portugieser Chronograph. One of the earliest models to be launched after the rebirth of the range, it succeeded the Portugieser Rattrapante with a simpler movement but almost identical design. And since its launch in 1998, with the exception of minimal design evolutions and a new movement, it hasn’t changed a bit – and for the best. Recently, however, IWC presented a new duo of Portugieser watches with Panda blue dials. And now that we’ve managed to see it in the metal, I can tell you that there’s a lot to love in what appeared at first as a negligible upgrade.?Let’s start with a brief historical reminder. The original IWC Portugieser was born in the 1930s, following the request of two Portuguese merchants (named Rodrigues and Teixeira), who wanted the precision of IWC’s deck clocks in wristwatch format for sailing. But that’s not what really matters here. The othe
5 Questions for Guillaume T¨ºtu, COO of Ralph Lauren Watches
In 2009, a new brand made its debut to the SIHH, the?Ralph Lauren Watch & Jewelry Co, a joint venture between the iconic lifestyle?brand and the Richemont Group, the watchmaking giant. Yet, the path?has not been simple and after several?unclear collections and hesitations in positioning the brand, the?brand was absent from the SIHH 2016. Though,?this was not the end of the story. New?teams,?repositioning of the collections,?appointment of industry?veteran?Guillaume T¨ºtu, first as?Product Development Director and as COO since October, finally a discreet comeback of the brand at the SIHH 2017. Collector's Series - @WatchWalker's Zenith Chronomaster Revival A385
Known on Instagram as @WatchWalker, the man we'll be talking with today is a globetrotter with Belgian roots. By chance, we ran into him on the internet, but haven't had the pleasure of meeting him in real life yet, due to the global pandemic. @Watchwalker has been a watch collector for many years, and although other brands lured him, his passion lies with Zenith Watches. In this episode of our Collector's Series, he highlights his Zenith Chronomaster Revival A385, and why it is a watch that was made for him Obviously, when you love cigars and Zenith, this dial was simply made for you.Frank Geelen, MONOCHROME – What was it that made you develop a passion for watches?@WatchWalker – Roughly twenty years ago, I remember doing some window shopping in Amsterdam and staring at all those beautiful Zenith watches I could not afford in those days. I loved watches since my childhood and remember playing as a 7-year-old in our attic with some mechanical watches my parents had stored t
Jacques Bianchi JB200 Dive Watch Re-Edition Kickstarter
Kickstarter can be a beautiful way to launch a brand and it abounds with great and equally disappointing projects. From time to time, we see great campaigns surface and today is one of them, marked by a distinct French accent. France has a long history when it comes to watches and, specifically, dive watches. From Comex to Captain Cousteau, watches for professional divers are closely associated with the city of Marseille, on the Mediterranean Sea. Another name, less famous perhaps but no less significant has to be added to this list: Jacques Bianchi, a watchmaker whose workshop overlooks the Old Port of Marseille. In the 1980s, he created a watch specifically for these men, and today it stages a comeback. Meet the Jacques Bianchi JB200 Dive Watch Re-Edition launching now on Kickstarter.? Behind this name is a man who is now in his eighties. With his workshop next to Marseille’s port, Jacques Bianchi has known Jacques Mayol and Captain Cousteau and his secon
SIHH 2017 - Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers Symphonia
SIHH 2017 - Vacheron Constantin unveils its first ever Grande Sonnerie wristwatch with the one-of-a-kind Les Cabinotiers Symphonia Grande Sonnerie 1860, a horological masterpiece boasting ingenious security devices, a smart strike-mode selector operated via the bezel and phantom quarters elimination. It's an impressive watch that we present to you today (and one that we'll be reviewing in greater detail once the SIHH over). The grande sonnerie and petite sonnerie hold a special place in the world of Haute Horlogerie. There is only a handful of watchmakers capable of manufacturing such works of arts, often regarded as the ultimate horological complication. Both the grande and petite sonnerie strike the hours and quarters in passing, though only the grande sonnerie repeats the hours at every quarter. Usually, they feature a selector to silence the mechanism and are combined with a minute repeater to chime time on demand. Their creation requires utmost technical expertise as hundreds of co
