2020 Cartier Santos-Dumont Limited-Edition Watches // News & Specs
Cartier expands its Santos timepiece collection with five very special limited-edition watches all bearing the names of the Brazilian aviator's legendary flying machines.? With such a colourful character like early aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont in your archives, it makes sense to capitalise on this particular chapter in Cartier's history. The son of a wealthy Brazilian coffee planter, Alberto Santos-Dumont settled in Paris where he cultivated his passion for flight. His request to Louis Cartier to devise a timepiece that would let him read the time without having to take his hands off the controls resulted in the world’s first men’s wristwatch in 1904 and spawned an entire collection in his name. Four limited editions christened with the names of Santos-Dumont’s flying machines join the collection. Crafted in precious platinum, yellow gold, and a combination of yellow gold and steel, all four models are fitted with an ultra-slim manual-winding movement.Albert
The Handsome Cuervo Y Sobrinos Historiador Cron¨®grafo 1946 - Monochrome Watches
Cuervo y Sobrinos, the only Swiss watch brand with Cuban roots, takes inspiration from a best-selling model recovered from its archives. Limited to 100 pieces, the Historiador Cron¨®grafo references the brand's colourful past but comes with a contemporary automatic chronograph movement.Cuervo, a jewellery and watch repair shop, was established in Havana, Cuba, by Spanish immigrant Don Ram¨®n Cuervo in 1882. Hands-On - Longines Avigation BigEye Titanium Blue Dial (price)
Longines and its Heritage collection… A range that comprises some of the most desirable watches produced by the brand, all inspired by some of Longines’ most glorious past watches, re-edited in a modern way but always with great historical relevance. One of the flagship models in this collection is the Avigation BigEye, a watch?modelled after an elusive 1930s watch with quite a resemblance with some glorious post-WWII pilot's chronographs. Also known as “Big Eye chronographs,” this specific type of watch was first re-issued in 2017 with the steel Avigation BigEye. And this year, the brand adds a new version, with an attractive petrol blue gradient dial, and a titanium case.?Inspired by the pastThe actual vintage Longines BigEye watch from the 1930s that inspired the design of the modern AvigationAs explained in our review of the steel model, the story behind the Longines Avigation BigEye Chronograph is anything but clear. The design is based on a 1930s pilot's c
Recap: The Best Dive Watches of 2024
There’s hardly a category of watches that is as disputed as the diver. Every year, in all price ranges and all possible styles, we’re seeing hundreds of new dive watches released by watchmakers from all over the world. Choosing the best models in this segment of the watch industry is not an easy task and is always subject to long internal discussions. But the MONOCHROME team has made it, and we’ve come to an agreement… Here are what we think were the 5 Best Dive Watches of 2024, ranging from accessible to high-end – and the funny thing is that both are closely related.?Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 42mm TitaniumThe Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is, without a doubt, one of the most important dive watches ever. Created back in the mid-1950s and one of the first purpose-built modern dive watches, it’s long been one of our favourites – but we had our reservations concerning recent collections. They were either too big or perfectly designed and proportioned but
SIHH 2016: Introducing the Panerai Luminor 8-Days Set - Two Pre-Vend?me Inspired Collector's Models (Hands-on Photos and Price) - Monochrome Watches
The history of Panerai is probably well known, with its link to?the Italian navy, and in particular the frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command of the Royal Italian Navy. The Florentine watchmakers created timepieces for the Royal Italian Navy; in?1936 they created the very first ‘Radiomir’. In 1940 the Radiomir was slightly changed (now Radiomir 1940) and in 1950 the legendary Luminor 1950, with its iconic crown protection mechanism, was first created. Much can be said about Panerai’s history, however commercial success didn’t start until the, what we now call, the pre-Vend?me period. During this year’s SIHH Panerai introduces a set of two pre-Vend?me inspired watches, the Panerai Luminor 8-Days set.?Limited to only 500 examples, the?new Luminor 8 Days set of two watches inspired by these pre-Vend?me watches; to be precise, the so-called?Slytech models that sold in 1996. The pre-Vend?me era was from?1992-1997 and Panerai offered three colle
