Watches NEWS
Interview - In Conversation with Philippe Dufour
Philippe Dufour is a living legend. The independent watchmaker is one of most (if not the most) revered craftsmen in the industry and his watches are regarded as the ultimate in traditional hand-finishing. We visited the 70-year-old master in the small village of Le Solliat, in the Vallee de Joux. There, Philippe Dufour crafts his watches entirely by hand, elevating the art of watchmaking to the highest level. Visiting his workshop is a unique experience. It is exactly what you have dreamed about, and yet everything is a surprise and catches your attention: old tools, ancient machines, drawers, books, raw materials This place has soul. How does one become one of the most revered craftsmen in the Swiss watch industry?First of all, it takes patience and hard work. You must remove some words from your vocabulary: weekends, holidays or retirement. Once this is done you can start. It's been a long road. Being recognized for your work takes years.? I have been an independent watchmaker since
Gerald Charles GC Sport Titanium (Hands-On, Price)
As we’ve explained in the past already, the name Gerald Charles might not be as familiar as Gerald Genta, but they actually belong to the same man. And behind the name Gerald Charles is an independent watchmaker that aims at reviving the spirit of the watches designed by the genius man in the mid-2000s. Something that we’ve demonstrated by looking at several editions of the signature Maestro watch, and specifically at the Maestro 2.0 Ultra-Thin. And now that you have this watch in mind, you can see that the new Gerald Charles GC Sport is part of the same family of watches… But there are important differences to be explained, and it has to do with the ability to take this unique design to unprecedented levels of sportiness. But without compromising anything regarding proportions and elegance.BackgroundGerald Charles Genta (1931-2011) is known as one of the most prolific designers of the watchmaking industry and his unique touch has cemented the future of so many icons.
Hands-On: The New IWC Pilot Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Black and Oceana
The concept was launched last year by IWC… The Colours of TOP GUN, a collection of bold and monochromatic watches in coloured ceramic, with matching dials and straps. Last year, the collection started with the Lake Tahoe, a white ceramic watch, and the Woodland Green, entirely green watches – there was also a Big Pilot 43 edition. And of course, we have to remember the very cool TOP GUN Mojave watches, with their sand-coloured ceramic cases, straps and dials. This year, for Watches & Wonders, IWC expands the collection, with more compact and monochromatic models again, in new colours. We're looking at the new IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Black ceramic and Oceana ceramic. Full-black or full-blue, the choice is yours. It's a bold concept that was developed by IWC… Monochromatic ceramic watches in an array of different colours, ranging from classic black to much more daring versions in beige or green. This year, it's time for a black ceramic watch to
Intoducing: Andersen Geneve Jumping Hours Black Jade Stone
Master watchmaker Svend Andersen has been a renowned figure on the independent watchmaking scene since 1980. The Danish watchmaker's ingenious and original approach to complications, including his sophisticated calendar watches and world timers, has captivated collectors and top-tier watch brands for years. To celebrate his 40th anniversary in watchmaking in 2020, Svend Andersen produced a stunning edition of his famous Jumping Hours complication in platinum with a blue guilloche dial. Four years later, the Jumping Hours returns with a hyper-sleek, black jade stone dial.In 1995, Svend Andersen was commissioned by a client to create a bespoke piece with jumping hours combined with a day/night display and minute repeater. After seeing the unique piece, Cartier requested the complication for its Pasha Jour et Nuit in 1988. Andersen Geneve's 40th Anniversary Jumping Hours eliminated the day/night function and, inspired by the layout of jumping hour pocket watches, placed the hour window at
Hands-On - The Longines Spirit Green Dial Collection (Specs & Price)
Presented in 2020, the Longines Spirit collection is a tribute to the pioneers who conquered the air, land and sea relying on their Longines time instruments. While it combines characteristic Longines and aviation design cues, this vintage-inspired line is not a re-edition and was created from scratch to celebrate this rich heritage. The collection comprises 40mm and 42mm time-and-date models and a chronograph, and all come with a chronometer-certified movement. Following the classic silver, black and blue dial iterations, the time-and-date models are now available with a green twist.?Green is the new blue, which was the new black, and it is now featured on the dial of the Longines Spirit watches with a dark shade of khaki paired with a matte sandblasted finish. Next to the classic silver, black and blue dial iterations, it allows Longines to introduce an additional colour to the collection with a sporty yet elegant twist. And, this feels rather coherent with the model's vintage-inspir
