The Chronograph 1 joins the regular collection with small updates
The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of a very important watch. Presented way back in 1972, the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 was the very first commercially available black-coated watch, and the very first product by Porsche Design as a newly founded company. Headed by Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche, Porsche Design started with and has always evolved around watches. For the majority of times, this was through collaborations with companies such as Orfina and IWC. Yet, as we've explained on numerous occasions, the time has moved on and Porsche Design now produces watches in-house. But the most important thing is the Chronograph 1 is still very much alive, and now moves into the regular collection with the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 All Black Numbered Edition.Earlier this year, Porsche Design launched the Chronograph 1 - 1972 Limited Edition, with the entire production run of 500 watches long sold out. Now though, the Chronograph 1 becomes part of the regular collec
Hands-On - Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Pre-SIHH 2018 (Specs & Price)
With the SIHH 2018 only a few weeks away, brands are pre-releasing selected models to whet our appetite. Among them is Montblanc, which has unveiled a new version of their iconic Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronograph. Meet the Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph, bringing a classic and elegant take on this watch that has always been a favourite here, at MONOCHROME.BackgroundIn 2008, Montblanc introduced its first Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph, a tribute to the French watchmaker, the first to have made a timepiece called a chronograph (in Greek chronos=time, graphein=to write) in 1821 – an invention actually writing time, as it?inks measured times intervals with a drop of ink squirted on a rotating dial at the push of a button. Like the invention of Rieussec, Montblanc's chronograph featured rotating discs for the elapsed seconds and minutes, read under fixed hands. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
Oris Aquis Date Cherry 43.5mm (Specs & Price)
There are several big name brands that offer affordable divers with pro credentials. Seiko's expansive Prospex collection and Hamilton's Khaki Navy Frogman Automatic are a couple of examples. Oris is a major player in the field and last year's Aquis Date 41.5mm Cherry Red introduced an eye-catching cherry red dial that seemed to target land dwellers. Let's be honest, many dive watches never actually see water outside of a rain shower or occasional dip in the pool. They're cool, stylish and have a rugged vibe that enthusiasts gravitate to, so the brand added some eye candy to an otherwise purpose-built piece, with the new Oris Aquis Date Cherry 43.5mm.The 43.5mm diameter of the stainless steel case of the Oris Aquis Date is well sized for a serious diver. In fact, that's the original size of the Aquis when it launched in 2011 and it has since been offered in smaller packages such as 39.5mm and 41.5mm. The style was updated in 2017 to a more refined aesthetic, but the collection has alwa
Panerai Luminor Chronograph Yachts Challenge 2019 ref. PAM00764 - PAM00788 - PAM001020 (Specs & Price)
The association of Panerai with the International Circuit for Classic Sailing Yachts is a long story that has led to the creation of multiple watches, under the name Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge (PCYC). Often regarded as some of the nicest watches in the collection, just like the Luminor 1950 PCYC ref. PAM00653 we reviewed recently (my favourite Panerai watch), the Italian brand unveils three new pieces with the PCYC logo on the dial and a marked departure from the vintage inspiration of previous models.? More modern and sportier, let’s take a look at the PAM00764, PAM00788 and PAM001020.The 2019 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge collection launches three new watches – as it is often the case with these nautical-inspired pieces. The previous collection, dating back to 2017, already houses three chronograph watches – two with flyback functions (ref. PAM00654 and PAM00653) and a more complex watch with a regatta complication and a larger case (ref. PAM00652). All of
We've compiled a list of watches sized below 40mm.
Watchmaking is very much a trend-driven industry, with, of course, a core selection of models, colours, sizes and materials standing the test of time. Colours come and go, sizes go up and down, and although new materials are regularly experimented with, the vast majority come in steel, with titanium, bronze and gold being the most popular alternatives. When it comes to the size of the watch, this is most often dictated by the movement, the intended purpose and its overall design. But, as these five watches will show you, the current trend for sizing a watch down to more compact dimensions results in some genuinely cool watches.Baltic Tricompax ChronographIn just a relatively short amount of time, Baltic has transcended the status of a microbrand and established itself as a name that’s most likely here to stay. Previously Baltic relied on Asian movements (no shame in that!) but recently upped its game as it presented the Baltic x Peter Auto Tricompax Special Edition racing set. Th
