There's something truly fascinating and intriguing with the idea of having something unique, something that you've designed together with the manufacturer's team Bespoke watchmaking isn't such a common practice and we're always rather curious to hear the stories behind the creation of a bold, highly personal watch. Something like this Czapek, which isn't the most consensual of all. After all, this is also what makes it such a cool story. Dr. Ayham Refaat, a 45 year-old surgeon, entrepreneur and CEO from Dubai, indeed wears a one-of-a-kind Czapek Antarctique Alpha on his wrist. It matches his search for unique pieces and complicated watches perfectly. In this edition of the Collector's Series, he tells us all about his journey with Czapek to create the ultimate personal watch.Frank Geelen, MONOCHROME – What was it that attracted you to the Czapek brand? IWC Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month - Monochrome Watches
In 2009 IWC created the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month (ref. 3761). It was the first flyback chronograph with a perpetual calendar and digital leap year display as well as a digital display for the month and date with large numerals. This development was a tour de force that has paid off: the result is a very clever way to combine a perpetual calendar and a chronograph, while maintaining the legibility of all functions. Monochrome goes hands-on with the IWC Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month.This is probably one of the most innovative perpetual calendars on the market, because of its digital display of day, month and leap year. And totally befitting the brand and its innovative and technical character, it’s presented in a watch case made of titanium aluminide. Titanium aluminide is used widely in motorsport, because the alloy is lighter and more robust than pure titanium. The black parts of the case are made of zirconium oxide, which is another materi
Hands-On: The Edouard Koehn World Heritage II, a Rare WorldTimer with Alarm
Operating out of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, for several years now, the brand Edouard Koehn carries four distinct collections. Of particular interest is the model introduced in 2021 as part of the World Heritage line, blending two practical complications: world time and alarm functions. While several mechanical watches offer combinations of an alarm with a GMT or dual time display, the fusion of alarm and world time is a rarity in the horological world. In 2023, Edouard Koehn introduced a limited edition World Heritage II series, maintaining the same concept and underlying movement while offering a fresh presentation for enthusiasts to explore; we had a hands-on experience, and here are our impressions.First, a few words about the name. Edouard Koehn (1839-1908) was a watchmaker and at one time the co-owner of Patek, Philippe & Cie (a specialist of world time watches) A name with roots tracing back to the 19th century, it resurfaced in the modern watchmaking scene in 2020 thank
Petrolhead Corner - The 1970 Lotus Type 66 That Never Was, Is Now A Reality
Like many car manufacturers built upon a passion for speed, performance and racing cars, Lotus has pretty much done it all and won it all. It raced in open-wheel categories such as the Indy500 and Formula 1 but also at Le Mans and various other prestigious championships around the world. For many years, this was driven by Colin Chapman’s forward-thinking engineering and although not every car was a success, Lotus always found a way to reinvent themselves to become championship contenders once more. Cars like the Lotus Elise and Lotus 7 paved the way for huge international successes and unique racing heritage. And on the occasion of the brand’s 75th anniversary Clive Chapman, Colin Chapman’s son, pulled back the covers of a car that actually never existed. Here’s the story of the fascinating Lotus Type 66.To say this car never existed, and now does, needs some explaining of course. For this, we take a trip down memory lane and go back to the 1960s and 1970s. This
