History of the Pilot Watch Part II - Zenith Montre dAeronef Type 20 - Monochrome Watches
The Wright Brothers and Alberto Santos ushered in the golden age of aviation as well as the Pilot Watch (as we told you in the History of Pilot Watches Part 1), and Louis Bleriot assumed their mantle.? Once it was possible to fly, newborn pilots raised the goals, and people attempted to do the impossible, like flying across the English Channel.? These newly minted pilots, these fledgling birds, having just left the nest, were now trying to write their names in the record books.? Bleriot succeeded, and Zenith was there, forever establishing the fusion of horology and flight. The prize to fly across the English Channel was 1,000 pounds - adjusted for inflation, a tidy sum in any age.? The French newspaper Le Matin disparaged the contest by declaring that there was no chance of a pilot winning the prize; the attempt was unreasonable. In 1909 with a Zenith strapped to his wrist, Bleriot crossed 31 miles of open water, stretching from horizon to horizon.? The flight from Calais to Dover last
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo 15206PT and 15207OR Yoshida
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin, with its modern steel iteration (Ref. 15202ST), needs no introduction anymore. The direct descendant of the 1972 original Royal Oak watch, still ultra-thin and identically proportioned, it is one of the most sought-after watches on the market and one of the most (if not the most) legitimate luxury sports watch. And while steel was part of the inaugural concept, precious metals made their appearance later… And they are still used today to create this rather special edition. Here are the Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin “Yoshida” 15206PT and 15207OR.Same case, just more preciousThese new (and rare) editions retain all the classic elements of the Jumbo case and bracelet, meaning a thin and reasonably large case, measuring 39mm x 8.1mm. The shapes, the bezel and the crown are familiar, with the signature octagonal-shaped bezel, eight white gold screws and a finishing combining straight brushed surfaces and polished accents.
Weekly Watch Photo - Audemars Piguet Millenary Star Wheel - Monochrome Watches
Again a photo made by GEO, although this time no Cartier. Audemars Piguet made this rare Millenary Star Wheel for the 125th anniversary of the brand and in my opinion one of the most beautiful of this manufacture. It’s almost refreshing to see another timepieces from Audemars Piguet, than the Royal Oak or Royal Oak Offshore collections. Like the Millenary collection, Audemars Piguet does have several more collections that are very appealing and much more elegant than the RO and ROO. Besides the Millenary I also enjoy beautiful esthetics of the Jules Audemars collection and?the Edward Piguet collection (especially the EP chronograph). Earlier I wrote about the Millenary Piano Forte, a
Patek Philippe 5303R Minute Repeater Tourbillon (Price)
Last year at Patek's Watch Art Grand Exhibition Singapore 2019, the brand unveiled its Minute Repeater Tourbillon Singapore, an elaborate minute repeater and tourbillon complication designed for Singaporean collectors and limited to just 12 pieces. To cater to local tastes, the flange of the dial was picked out in red and the flange for the hours and minutes was printed with stars to evoke the stars of Singapore's flag. Today the brand launches a similar watch to join its permanent collection with a new colour scheme, its first minute repeater with the striking mechanism on the dial side. Meet the new Patek Philippe 5303R Minute Repeater Tourbillon.Patek Philippe made its first minute repeater in 1845, just six years after the brand was founded in Geneva. Coinciding with its 175th anniversary in 2014, Patek showcased its prowess for this complication with the Grandmaster Chime and its five chiming functions. Five years later, a steel version of the Grandmaster Chime was auctioned at On
Hands-on - 2021 Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic (Specs & Price)
Since its introduction in 2017, the Captain Cook collection has become an important pillar for Rado. This vintage-oriented model was the answer of the brand to the demand for sporty, cool watches. If Rado benefits from a?rich history, and several emblematic watches from the past, there was one area of the brand’s expertise that was somehow not used to its maximum yet with this collection. Know as the “Master of Materials,” Rado has somehow managed to bring ceramic to traditional watchmaking on a larger scale. And today, its successful vintage-oriented dive watch gets the full ceramic touch. Here are the 4 new Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic watches, in the metal.?BackgroundAs previously explained, the modern Captain Cook collection is inspired by a glorious and quite conspicuous watch produced by the brand during the golden age of the dive watch. This watch was released in 1962 with a 37mm case and named after the British explorer, Captain Cook. While technically
