Interview - Talking To Remi Maillat, The Man Behind Krayon Watches
Independent watchmaker Krayon was created a few years ago by Remi Maillat. Besides his developments behind the scene for other brands, Krayon made a remarkable debut with the mindbogglingly complex Everywhere, the first mechanical watch able to compute the sunrise and sunset times everywhere on the globe. This impressive world-first earned Krayon a well-deserved accolade at the GPHG 2018 with the Innovation Prize. Maillat sits at an interesting intersection at watchmaking. His watches are classic and, at the same time, profoundly modern and innovative. On the occasion of a visit to Krayon's new facilities in Neuchatel, we sat for a talk with the independent watchmaker to better understand his work.Xavier Markl, MONOCHROME – How did you become hooked on watchmaking? 2021 Excelsior Park Hand-Wound Chronograph Collection Review
As we’ve said already on many occasions, there are mainstream brands, and then there are so-called niche brands that are mostly known by seasoned collectors But don’t think this makes them less important. In fact, this might give these smaller, often undervalued historic names even more resonance and charm. One of them might ring a bell: Excelsior Park. A brand founded in 1866 and known as one of the pioneers of the chronograph, it fell into oblivion until this year. Thanks to Guillaume Laidet, the man behind the resurrection of Nivada, Excelsior Park presents its inaugural collection And yes, these are vintage-oriented, charm-packed, hand-wound, attractively priced chronographs that will certainly speak to a seasoned audience.Concise History of Excelsior ParkExcelsior was born in 1866 in the small but quite famous (at least if you’re into watches) town of St. Imier, Switzerland – also the hometown of Longines and the birthplace of Breitling. Founded as a watch
Introducing: The new Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre Chronograph Moon
During the 2024 edition of Watches & Wonders, Jaeger-LeCoultre welcomes back the Duometre, one of its most technical, high-end collections. Thanks to the development of the new calibre 391, the Duometre Chronograph Moon combines a high-precision chronograph with a celestial complication. Further evolutions regarding the case and dial mark this model as one of the brand’s most important releases for 2024.Jaeger-LeCoultre launched its groundbreaking Duometre mechanism in 2007. Determined to overcome the problem posed by complications that deplete the power reserve and jeopardise the escapement’s precision, JLC masterminded the Duometre or Dual-Wing system, a two-pronged solution composed of two independent mechanisms. Fitted with two separate barrels and two independent gear trains, one is tasked with driving the escapement and keeping the time functions, while the other powers the complications. With its two independent mechanisms united by a single regulating organ, the
First Look: The Even More Complex MB&F LM Sequential Flyback
The aphorism “if it ain't broke, don't fix it” is not often used by watchmaker Stephen McDonnell, the mastermind behind MB&F's most complex timepieces enhanced with his innovative technological breakthroughs. Responsible for the 2015 LM Perpetual and the LM Sequential EVO, fans of MB&F's wonderful watches will be delighted to learn that Stephen McDonnell is back. This time, McDonnell ups the functionality of his award-winning chronograph calibre by incorporating a flyback function. However, for this new souped-up edition of 33 pieces, MB&F restages the complications in a more classical Legacy Machine capsule. Soaring in a platinum case with a sky-blue dial plate, the LM Sequential Flyback is the stuff watchmaking dreams are made of.The LM Sequential EVO, released in 2022, was MB&F's first chronograph and 20th calibre, and in true MB&F style, it had to be mind-blowing. Calling on a longstanding MB&F friend and watchmaking wizard, Stephen McDonnell, th
