Interview - The Online Watch Market - Philipp Budiman from Montredo
Yesterday we started with the first in a series of interviews with the CEOs of the world’s largest online watch marketplaces. Each and every place has its own specific ways of dealing with trade; one company owns the displayed inventory, the other doesn’t, and a third has a hybrid approach. One way or another, all these companies want to give you the best and most secure buying experience. But how do they do it? The respective CEOs explain this and today we’re talking with Philipp Budimann, CEO of Montredo.Montredo is a newer marketplace, but already one of the largest players on the Internet. During our conversation, Philipp mentioned that his readers love videos like Montredo's Meet the Manufacturer and Hodinkee's Talking Watches. And then he told me that I could leave out mentioning Hodinkee’s videos. Of course not! At MONOCHROME we also love watching Talking Watches! Now on to the interview with Philipp Budimann, CEO of Montredo. Can you give us a quick histo
In-Depth: Diving with the Sinn U50, The Smaller German Diving Instrument
If you're on this website, reading the latest article in my diving test series, there's a pretty good chance that you have at least a passing familiarity with Sinn watches. There is an equally good chance that most of your non-watch-nerd friends, family, and colleagues do not. Flying just under the radar, Sinn has been producing beautifully well-made toolwatches for over 60 years now. If there's any brand that functions as a nod and a wink and a horological secret handshake, it's this Uhrmacher aus Germany. And that handshake has to be done with an iconic diving instrument (it really is that) on the wrist, a Sinn U1 Or should it be its smaller, more versatile brother, the Sinn U50?A Bit of HistoryFounded in Frankfurt in 1961 by former WWII pilot and flight instructor Helmut Sinn, the brand initially focused on the manufacture of navigation clocks and pilot chronographs. In the 1960s and 1970s Sinn manufactured watch cases for military and consumer use, including the notable Heuer/Sinn
The classical hand-wound Patek Philippe 5172G now with salmon pink dial
The classically styled Chronograph 5172G is one of the most beautiful chronograph watches from Patek Philippe, and perfectly showcases the Maison's capabilities in the field. It was presented in 2019 with a superb deep blue attire, but for Watches & Wonders 2022 Patek upped the ante once more with a luscious salmon-pink tone. Here's the Patek Philippe Chronograph 5172G.The hand-wound chronograph watch has always played a key role at Patek Philippe, and the 5172G is no exception to the rule. While the 5172G was a change from the classical Calatrava-style case of the 5170, it features the superb Art Deco style lugs from the 5320. This combination makes for one extremely attractive watch, especially in this salmon tone (a favourite among the MONOCHROME team). Introducing the Tudor Pelagos Blue and Black with new In-House movement - Monochrome Watches
In 2012 Tudor introduced the Pelagos ref.25500TN, a watch that we consider Tudor’s answer on the Sea-Dweller. The ultimate tool watch, made in light and technical looking titanium, and water resistant to 500 meters. Here at Monochrome we have a thing for proper tool watches and the Pelagos perfectly fits the bill. Last year we predicted that Tudor would launch a blue Pelagos and, since they didn’t, and we really wanted to see that one, we predicted it this year again. Here it is, finally, the Tudor Pelagos Blue, and it now comes with Tudor’s new in-house movement.Tudor’s new in-house movement is the calibre MT5612 and packs 70 hours of power reserve. Even better, when you know that the price of the Pelagos will not be raised much in comparison to the previous model, and is set at a very decent (read: competitive) CHF 4200 Swiss Francs (including 8% VAT). Do you have your attention now? An ultimate diving tool, rating to 500m, with a brand new in-house designed
