In-Depth - A Complete Collector's Guide to Daniel Roth and His Career
Daniel Roth is one of the most remarkable watchmakers of all time. During his 50-year career, Roth has worked with countless high-end brands and designed dozens of intriguing timepieces with complex technical features, including a Tourbillon with an 8-day power reserve, an instantaneous Perpetual Calendar and a Westminster Grande Sonnerie Carillon with four gongs. Surprisingly, not much is known about his roots and early days. Watch enthusiast Denny Grigolo from Italy undertook the time-consuming task of finding everything there is to know about Daniel Roth's story. MONOCHROME is grateful and proud to publish an English recap of his four-part research article, Daniel Roth: Storia di un Genio. Paying tribute to one of the most illustrious names in contemporary watchmaking necessarily starts with the story of another founding father of high watchmaking and genius, Abraham-Louis Breguet.Image by Jean Daniel NicolasNote: This article has been made possible by collating data from four in-de
The History of the Pilot Watch Part Four: Longines and Lindbergh - Monochrome Watches
Recreating the ubiquitous association between Longines and aviation that existed at the close of the 1920s requires a dash of H.G. Wells' time travel and an active imagination, maybe even some psychotherapy.?When psychologists use a word association test, they ask you to name the first word that comes to mind. For example, when I hear the word ocean, I think of the Caribbean. Common pairings, however, emerge when they are a part of the cultural lingo: hear Volkswagen/think Beetle; hear Babe Ruth/think home run; hear Caesar/think Rome - you get the idea. So what comes to mind when you hear Longines? Aviation??If so, some might think you need to get your head examined, but there was a time when Longines was the ready answer. When aviation emerged from its pioneering development (led by pilots Alberto Santos-Dumont and Louis Bleriot) into its Golden Age between the two World Wars, flying became a household topic and Longines was aviation's associated partner primarily due to one man: Charl
Capturing The Ocean's Energy, With Six Watches With Wavey Dials - Monochrome Watches
Dial textures can make or break a watch, but if done right they elevate the display of time into something gripping, something very impactful. One of the more common but always interesting textures, especially in aquatic (-inspired) watches, is the wave pattern. Sure, Clous de Paris or vertical or horizontal grooves are often very nice, but there’s something rather appealing in replicating the gentle undulations of the ocean. And that isn’t relegated to pure dive watches, as more sporty land-locked alternatives or even seriously complicated watches are adorned with waves. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best! And yes, I am well aware of the fact the list includes two (soon-to-be) sold-out limited editions, but they’re just too good to be ignored.?Omega Seamaster 300M No-DateOf course, we had to start with the long-awaited but secretly already revealed Omega Seamaster Diver 300M No-Date. It was teased on Daniel Craig’s wrist numerous tim
Ulysse Nardin Hannibal Minute Repeater Tourbillon - Hands-on review of a 725.000 CHF watch (live photos, specs & price) - Monochrome-Watches
What a complicated piece of haute horlogerie… This?Ulysse Nardin Hannibal combines no less than a tourbillon, a very complicated minute repeater, automatons, a distinctive dial material, superb finishes and the use of Metiers d’Arts techniques. With this timepiece, Ulysse Nardin achieved quite a prowess: combining a?Westminster Repeater (meaning certainly the most complicated type of chiming mechanism) with?jaquemarts (a sort of automatons). Clearly, this?Ulysse Nardin Hannibal Minute Repeater is far from being a daily beater. Let’s have a look. We'll get directly to the main disadvantage of this sort of ultra-complicated watches. It will cost you an arm, leg, two kidneys and your house. As you can expect, the?Ulysse Nardin Hannibal Minute Repeater Tourbillon is an extremely exclusive watch and with that exclusivity comes a price of 725.000 Swiss Francs and limited to 30 pieces. However, there are good reasons to this price, including a very complicated movement and th
Introducing the Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Day-Date and Power Reserve Collection Excellence Platine - Monochrome Watches
Shortly before the Watches & Wonders fair in Hong Kong, Vacheron Constantin adds a new version of the beautiful calibre 2475 to the Collection Excellence Platine. Originally introduced into the collection in the legendary Jubilee 1755, in 2005, and since 2008 available in the Quai de l’Ile collection, it now returns in a lovely classically styled execution: the Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Day-Date and Power Reserve Collection Excellence Platine. Since its creation in 2006 Vacheron Constantin’s Collection Excellence Platine pays homage to the purity of the material platinum. Platinum is 95% pure, compare that to 18-carat gold that is just 75% pure gold. The additional 25% determines the colour of gold (pink, rose, red, yellow or white.) Platinum usually is mixed with 5% palladium or copper. Watches in the Collection Excellence Platine are always individually numbered and never exceeding 150 pieces per model. This Traditionnelle Day-Date and Power reserve features
