Breguet 2516 Possibly First Purpose-Built Perpetual Calendar Wristwatch
As we explained yesterday in a more technical/historical article, this year is special, being a leap year. As such, this is the perfect time to talk perpetual calendars, watches specifically designed to take into account this specificity of the Gregorian calendar, when February lasts 29 days instead of its usual 28 days. And today’s perpetual calendar watch is special… Not only because it looks absolutely stunning, but because it is one of the most historically important wristwatches, from one of the most important watchmakers (if not the most important of them all). This is the story of the Breguet no. 2516, possibly the first-ever, purpose-built perpetual calendar wristwatch.A succinct history of the Perpetual CalendarMan’s struggle to create a rational system that accurately reflects Earth's rotations around the Sun and fixed astronomical events led to the creation of a rather complex calendar in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII, later named the Gregorian calendar –
Introducing Bulgari Octo Finissimo Special Edition Phillips Watches
Bulgari seems intent on marking the 10th anniversary of the Octo Finissimo with limited editions and collaborations. After all, what are friends for if not to share the festive mood? A couple of weeks ago, we talked about an Octo Finissimo Tattoo Acqua, the second edition in limited series created with tattoo artist Mo Copoletta. Now comes an even more unusual release. The fact that it is an auction house that took pride in co-creating this special edition is remarkable, yes, but what is amazing and previously not present in the Octo Finissimo Automatic series is a dial without the small seconds counter at 7 o’clock. Let’s have a look at the new Octo Finissimo Special Edition Phillips In Association With Bacs & Russo.Bulgari reports that a few ideas were exchanged between Aurel Bacs, Senior Consultant, Bacs & Russo and Alexandre Ghotbi, Head of Watches, Continental Europe & Middle East and Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, Product Creation Executive Director, Bulga
Modillian Smart Strap: Teaching An Old Watch New Tricks - Monochrome-Watches
Why do we insist on vaunting technology from the 18th, 19th and 20th century when we are resting on the cusp of a technological revolution in time keeping? Don't throw away your dumb old watch. Make it a Smart Watch with a Modillian Smart Strap!Historians and watch nerds can debate who was the first to actually produce a watch that was meant to be worn on the wrist but the heart of the matter is that the wristwatch as we know it is 110 years old (If you consider the Cartier Santos to be the first one in 1904). In the last two centuries there have been many improvements made to the size, accuracy, functionality and shape of the mechanical watch. In the past half-century we've seen quartz watches push miniaturization and accuracy even further. Then the advent of the integrated circuit gave rise to digital watches that had alarms, count-down timers, multiple time zones, calendars with alerts and a host of other functions that sound great when you buy them but frankly never use. (Of course
The Auction Hammer: Elvis Presleys Omega Constellation - Monochrome Watches
It's Now or Never, or it will be at the Antiquorum sale of Important Modern and Vintage Timepieces in New York on December 11. If You're Lonesome that night you might want to take yourself downtown to Madison Avenue where among the highlights will be the rare sighting of a c.1960 Omega Constellation, which was once owned and worn by a king. And not just any old king either, we're talking about The King himself - Elvis Presley!Charlie Hodge, a successful musician himself, became a close friend of Presley during their time together when both were serving in the US Army. The two struck up a lasting chemistry between them, and their friendship would endure until the Legend's death, with Hodge a faithful and loyal aide and counsel, and even residing in Graceland for 16 years. Presley's Omega Constellation regularly drew admiring comments from his friend, and eventually Hodge was made a gift of the watch as a token of their bond. The Elvis Presley Omega Constellation features the Cal. 504 man
Introducing The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Moon Phase Retrograde Date (Live Pics)
The Vacheron Constantin Overseas collection debuted in 1996 but was viewed by many as a successor to Vacheron’s 222 models, designed by Jorg Hysek (that wasn’t Genta)?and presented in 1977. The collection, updated in 2016, is built around the popular concept of a sports luxury watch, with various editions of the casually elegant Overseas always in high demand. Vacheron successfully blended high watchmaking into the sporty-chic Overseas line, offering several complications, including a tourbillon, perpetual calendar ultra-thin, chronograph and dual time models. The Maison adds a reference with a moon-phase display and a retrograde date this year. The retrograde indication is a feature found in the Patrimony collection, but until now, it was not part of the Overseas offering. It is worth mentioning that the unusual display made its way into Vacheron Constantin’s assortment in the 1990s, first with the Metiers d’Art collection Mercator models with a double retrograd
