Six Watches with Unique Power Reserve Displays - Monochrome Watches
There’s a certain tyre manufacturer from Italy that claims “Power is nothing without Control”, and to an extent, that is very true about mechanical watches as well. Sure, you can have the most beautifully constructed watch, but if you don’t harness the energy that’s generated by winding it properly, it’s useless. Luckily, we’ve figured out how to regulate that a long time ago and in some watches, you get a very practical display to keep track of things. This so-called Power Reserve display (or indicator) can take many shapes and forms, some more intuitive than others, but it’s always a very useful element, especially in manually wound watches. For that simple reason, we’re taking a closer look at some of the most original, clever and impressive ways to display power.Longines Conquest Heritage Power ReserveLongines has one of the most impressive archives in the business, and it’s a regular source of inspiration for the brand. First Look: The AP Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked 150th Anniversary 26585XT
Last year, with the John Mayer limited edition, Audemars Piguet announced the end of its older perpetual calendar movement, the calibre 5134. And indeed, as we have seen with the launch of the next-gen Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Selfwinding, there is now a new and modern calibre 7138. But it’s not entirely the end of the old JLC-derived movement, as AP had one last trick up its sleeve to celebrate its 150th anniversary: an openworked Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar (ref. 26585XT) in a mix of titanium and BMG, using the skeletonized calibre 5135. So yes, the 5134 is gone… but it has managed to survive in a stripped-down version in this new and impressive watch.?The new Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked 150th Anniversary is housed in a 41mm wide and 9.9mm thick titanium case, water-resistant to 20m – as all the older-gen RO QPs. The bezel, caseback frame, and bracelet mid-links are crafted from BMG – or Bulk Metallic Glass – an alloy con
Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock (Price)
Born in the mid-1970s and relaunched a few years ago, the Laureato is GP's answer to the growing market of the luxury sports watch. This classic watch has been joined recently with a bolder, sportier edition, the Laureato Absolute. With this new 100-piece limited edition, the design of the Girard-Perregaux Laureato is reinforced by an unusual material. Indeed, the Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock is crafted from carbon glass. A sandwich-style dial sits above a Manufacture self-winding chronograph movement held inside a case that weighs just 94 grams. Overview.Signatures of the sports watchWhen we think of the steel sports watch craze of the 1970s, we instantly recall Gerald Genta's recognizable Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch design, identified by a unique, trendsetting octagonal-shaped bezel and a portal-inspired aesthetic that collectors far and wide just couldn't resist. Girard-Perregaux developed its own take on a steel sports watch a few years later. Released with a cushion-shaped c
First Look: The 2mm Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon is the new Worlds Thinnest Tourbillon
One field of expertise immediately comes to mind when thinking about Piaget: the art of crafting ultra-thin watches. Throughout its history, the brand has become synonymous with legendary calibres, such as the 2mm thin 9P introduced in 1957 and the 2.3mm thin 12P micro-rotor movement unveiled in 1960. Approximately a decade ago, the groundbreaking 900P heralded a radical reengineering of watch architecture, seamlessly fusing the mainplate with the caseback. This innovation laid the groundwork for the creation of the Altiplano Ultimate Concept, unveiled in 2018 at a mere 2mm thickness, making it the thinnest mechanical watch ever produced at the time. As the brand celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2024, a milestone to mark that date was to be expected. The latest iteration of the AUC, the Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon, retains its remarkable 2mm profile, a hallmark of its predecessors. However, it now boasts the addition of a tourbillon, making it the thinnest tourbillon watch
