The History of the Pilot Watch Part III: Mark IV.A and Mark V - Monochrome Watches
The two most import catalysts for the development of aviation watches were early aviation record attempts and war. World War I finds watch development between the pocket watch and the new wristlets with the British issuing pilots pocket watches. British Mark IV.A and Mark V pocket watches are an example of WW1 military aviation.World War I conjures childhood images of bi-planes fitted with a machine gun to fire through the propeller, the Red Baron's plane emerging triumphant from a dogfight, and the endless lines of trenches on the ground below. Add the romanticism of aviation to the romanticism of war, and you have an iconic, if mistakenly idealized, pairing. War's demand for precise navigation or coordinated attack meant that the world grasped the importance of horology. When “balloon busting” or taking out observation balloons, British pilots flew with the pocket watch Mark IV.A (1914) and Mark V (1916).Doxa Mark V (source: Military Watch Forum)Case back markings, unique
WATCH & ACT! - Together with Time+Tide, Help Fight the Australian Bushfire Crisis With Great Watches To Be Auctioned - Monochrome Watches
Today we have a very special story… A story that I’m both sad and happy to write. Sad, for the main reason that it is all due to one of the world’s worse ecological events, the current Australian bushfire crisis. Yet, I’m also happy to write these words as multiple actors within the watch community – watch manufacturers and watch media – have decided to join a cause and to act. For once, all together, we can let our love for watches go a long way further than our wrists. We can make our passion be a solution to raise funds to help a cause. This cause is “Watch & Act!”, an auction of 16 watches with 100% of proceeds to be distributed across charities to help fight Australia’s environmental nightmare. The bushfire situationIf you’ve watched the news in recent weeks, you can’t have missed what’s happening in Australia. The “Bushfire Crisis” is now known as one of the most terrible ecological events of t
Introducing: Orient Introduces Its First-Ever Collaboration with Peanuts, with 4 Snoopy Models
As we’ve seen recently, Orient, a Japanese watchmaker owned by the Seiko Epson Corporation, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Created in 1950, it has since made a name for itself in the accessible segment with watches such as the Mako or the Bambino. There’s another important name that was created that same year;?a comic strip in American newspapers named Peanuts featuring emblematic characters such as Charlie Brown, Woodstock and, of course, Snoopy (a well-known name in watchmaking) For the occasion, Orient and Peanuts have teamed up to launch 4 limited editions in celebration of their respective 75th anniversaries this year – two Bambino 38, one Semi Skeleton and a Mako 40.?Founded in 1950, Orient has built its credibility as a trusted, accessible watch brand with its in-house manufactured mechanical watches. Another globally loved brand celebrating its 75th year is Peanuts, which also began in 1950 as a comic strip in American newspapers. Created by Ch
Tudor Heritage Black Bay 41
Last year, Tudor Watch surprised us (and by that I mean a very pleasant surprise) with a small, super clean and properly elegant watch: the Black Bay 36. We reviewed it, even our vintage guy tested it… and we loved it. This year, this same stunning look, clean and inspired, comes back in a more masculine diameter. Meet the?Tudor Heritage Black Bay 41 ref. 79540, same but different.Basically, this?Tudor Heritage Black Bay 41 ref. 79540 takes the recipe of last year’s 36mm and adapts it in the classical masculine Tudor case, meaning 41mm. This watch has a slightly different taste than the usual Black Bay. The lack of the rotating bezel actually sets the watch in a different category. No more tool, not yet dress watch… it is the perfect?definition of a casual, elegant sports watch. No useless features, just the essential, but yet a great presence on the wrist, already in 36mm. This year, the increased size brings the concept to men. Ad - Scroll to continue wit
Industry SIHH And Baselworld To Coordinate Their Dates From 2020
The rumour had been around for some time now, many were hoping for this to happen, and now it’s official. Baselworld and SIHH will coordinate their dates as of 2020. The two major trade shows of the watch industry will synchronize their calendars. The SIHH will be held from 26 to 29 April in Geneva, followed immediately by Baselworld from 30 April to 5 May in Basel. Better yet, the calendars have been synchronized until 2024.This sound decision – in view of the challenges that these events are facing – is announced just a few days ahead of SIHH 2019 that will soon be throwing its doors open with some 35 brands gearing up to unveil their latest models. In some ways, this means going back to normal'. For years, the Geneva and Basel fairs had been held one after the other in March-April until SIHH announced it would be organized in January. The news means that the watch industry professionals will no longer need to travel twice to Switzerland in a short period of time.Fa
