Introducing Ming 27.01 - The Brand's Second-Generation Design Language
Since the inception of the brand in 2017, with the inaugural 17.01 model, renowned photographer Ming Thein has turned out to be also quite an impressive designer and watch entrepreneur, creating a brand with a consistent style and development. 2020 marks a new step for Ming Watches, which is introducing its second-generation design language and, coincidentally, a new watch. Leaner, dressier and beautifully finished, Ming has undergone an earnest exercise in reduction and restraint. So here’s the slimmest and sleekest watch in his repertoire, the new Ming 27.01.Brief BackgroundTom Mulraney, a regular contributor at MONOCHROME, covered?the debut of Malaysian watch brand Ming in 2017. As a friend of founder Ming Thein, Tom, like many other people in the watch industry, was familiar with?Ming's work as a watch photographer. Ming's first watch, the 17.01, was a surprise but extremely well received. A contemporary yet elegant 38mm watch with superlative finishes, a Swiss hand-wound mov

Introducing: Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Boutique-Exclusive Collection
First released in 2005 as a more powerful version of the Omega Seamaster, the Planet Ocean 600m has now become an entire collection with various complications, sizes and colours/materials?– without even mentioning its bigger brother, the mighty PO 6000m. Discreetly released by Omega, six new references join the collection – three time-and-date 43.5mm and three chronographs 45.5mm – available exclusively from the brand’s boutiques. Executed in subdued earthy tones, these new Boutique-only Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m add elegance to this solid collection.?While the PO 600m collection is often characterised by its hallmark orange accents – the orange-coloured aluminium bezel was the signature element of the launch model in 2005 – Omega has recently decided to give it a more discreet attire, with various editions playing on monochromatic schemes or more subtle colours. Think, for instance, about the Deep Black collection or the recent Dark Grey GMT model
Branding and Jaquet Droz's automata - Monochrome Watches
It¡äs a funny thing with brands: we can hardly imagine today that there used to be a time that practically every name of a customer, retailer or group of collectors, could be easily stamped on a dial, movement or case. The now prestigious names of established brands were hidden away, either engraved in the movement, the case-back or even unmentioned. The brand, if watch producers even considered themselves to be one, was a modest servant of the public. Jaeger-LeCoultre produced dentist tools and shaving equipment to survive and Patek Philippe watches that are now sought after in auction houses, were proudly bearing the names of the retailers on the dial, above or even sometimes instead of the brand itself. There are also many examples of and Tiffany & Co like this vintage pre-daytona that somehow didn’t sell that well, back in the days. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
Ochs & Junior Calendario CentAnni Perpetual Calendar
Where other brands choose the path of complexity and try to outdo one another in parts count, Ochs & Junior goes the opposite direction. In a literal pursuit of simplicity, the independent watchmaking brand is famous for doing extremely creative things with as little as possible. This includes an Annual Calendar with only three moving parts and an extremely accurate moon phase indication using only five components. Slightly breaking with tradition, as the latest series of watches will not be customisable, Ochs & Junior continues its dedication to simplification with the new Ochs & Junior Calendario Cent'Anni CCA Perpetual Calendar.Collectors and enthusiasts familiar with the brand will know the history and philosophy, yet it remains a fascinating story to tell. Ochs & Junior is the brainchild of Dr Ludwig Oechslin, a legendary name in the watchmaking world. The Ulysse Nardin Freak is widely regarded as his biggest achievement since it was the first production watch ever
