Hands-On Green Ceramic AP Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT
For many of us, a concept watch is designed to show off a brand's technical skills and potential direction for the future. Like the concept cars the idea was borrowed from, concept watches tend to be cutting-edge, humongously complex, far-out timepieces that are eventually toned down and evolve into tamer commercial editions or never see the light of day. At Audemars Piguet, the first Royal Oak Concept watch was unveiled in 2002 and, in an unusual turn, evolved into a full-fledged collection known as the Royal Oak Concept. One of its members, the Flying Tourbillon GMT, is back in the limelight with a new green ceramic bezel - a first for this collection -, green accents on the openworked dial and the imposing 44mm titanium case built like a rampart to protect the in-house movement.Royal Oak ConceptTwenty years ago, AP celebrated the 30th anniversary of its iconic Royal Oak with the launch of a 150-piece limited edition inspired by a concept car. Introducing MB&F x BULGARI Legacy Machine FlyingT Allegra
What happens when you bring together the creative force behind Rome’s most famous luxury emporium and the creative mind behind some of watchmaking’s most radical flights of fancy? The answer is sheer magic. The collaboration between Bvlgari and MB&F, or rather between Bvlgari’s creative director Fabrizio Buonamassa and MB&F’s founder and creative director Maximilian Busser, has resulted in this extraordinary take on the Legacy Machine FlyingT, an exuberant, high jewellery version of MB&F’s first women’s watch. Presented in 20 pieces in white gold and 20 pieces in red gold, the FlyingT Allegra watch is a triumphant combination of the distinct personalities of two radically different brands.?MB&F’s founder and creative director Maximilian Busser and Bvlgari’s creative director Fabrizio BuonamassaWouldn’t it be cool ifAs Maximilian Busser explains in our exclusive video interview (at the top of this article), many colla
Hands-On: The Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8
Last Tuesday (of course), Omega presented its latest Speedmaster model, the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8. As an updated version of an existing model, the watch felt highly familiar at first sight. Presented in 2018 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the mission that first observed the other side of our satellite (and also the first human spaceflight to reach the Moon…), this DSOTM Apollo 8 was characterized by its lunar texture on both sides and its bold black and yellow colour scheme. With the new model, it seems that not much has changed, apart from a seconds hand shaped like Saturn V and an updated movement. But is it really that simple? Let’s dive into the details.?Quick recap New movement – calibre 3869, based on the calibre 3861 with Co-Axial escapement, silicon hairspring and Master Chronometer certification Slightly reshaped case, still at 44.25mm in diameter, but 0.8mm thinner New bezel without SLN but with tachymeter scale in enamel Better-de
The new Porsche 911 Sport Classic and matching Porsche Design watch.
We've often talked about parallels between watchmaking and other industries. One to regularly be mentioned is the obvious connection to cars. Both are mechanical items at heart and can rely on an enormous following from across the world. The prime reason for this link is the fact that motorsports (and subsequently cars in general) have a lot to do with timing. Acceleration, top speed, lap times, and endurance records, all revolve around covering as much ground in as little time possible. One more parallel is the use of limited and/or special editions. Cap off a production run at a certain level and immediately a watch instantly attracts more attention. With cars it's no different, as clearly showcased with the new Porsche 911 Sport Classic we're featuring today. Oh, and there's a limited-edition Porsche Design watch too, for good measure.Ferdinand A. “Butzi” Porsche, leaning on an early Porsche 911 sportscar.Porsche can look back at a storied and at times rocky history, and
Five Watches Presented in 2021 Making Full Use of Luminescence - Monochrome Watches
Some watches shine brighter than others; we all know that. And that doesn't necessarily have to be attributed to copious amounts of gems or a superbly polished case. It can also be the result of the amount and application of luminescent material. And this, quite literally, can make a watch shine brighter than any diamond, especially at night! Here's our list of five watches presented in 2021 that put Super-LumiNova to good use!Bovet 1822 Virtuoso VIII Chapter Two ReimaginedIt might be considered an unlikely candidate for a Buying Guide, but Bovet is not a brand that shies away from the unconventional.
