Hands-On - A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus Titanium Limited Edition
The A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus is a surprising watch on many levels. Dubbed the ALS you can wear on a daily basis, it’s a rather Germanic take on the luxury sports watch, with a different approach to the concept than, for instance, the Royal Oak, Nautilus or Overseas. More complex, less integrated, not that thin… far less Genta-esque, in fact. It truly has its own personality and, even though it came as a surprise in 2019, it has become a success for the brand. Building on its popularity, the Saxon brand decided to release its first limited edition (as if the regular steel version was easy to get!), the Odysseus Titanium. And yes, it is a stunning watch on many levels. Probably the best of the collection so far. But it’s also a watch that has provoked comments. The A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus, as presented in 2019It might sound a bit cliche to start this article by already saying that the A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus Titanium is a stunning watch. Truth is, this w
Industry News: Breitling Acquires Historic Brand Universal Geneve
Despite being barely existent anymore or now a memory from the past, some brands continue to live within the collecting community, benefitting from a certain aura. One of these brands is Universal Geneve, a once-prominent manufacturer known for its innovative designs (the Polerouter or the Tri-Compax, to name a few) and technically advanced movements (the famed micro-rotor). With the quartz crisis, Universal Geneve became the shadow of itself, still producing watches as the subsidiary of a Hong Kong-based investment firm. These days are over, as UG comes back into Swiss hands after Breitling and its main shareholder Partners Group have announced its acquisition of Universal Gene?ve, a move that “promises to restore the prestige of a hallowed name in the world of luxury timepieces,” according to the brand.Founded in 1894, Universal Geneve grew to become one of the top Swiss watchmakers, providing watch enthusiasts with models such as the Tri-Compax, the Aero-Compax, dozens o
Patek Philippe 5270P Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Platinum Salmon Dial (Specs & Price)
The perpetual calendar chronograph is a combination of complications that belongs' to Patek Philippe. The 5270 continues a long tradition initiated in 1941. It was introduced in 2011 with an in-house movement as the successor of the 5970, itself an evolution of the 3970 (read our article about the different generations of the 5270 here). It is now available for the first time in the noblest of all metals, platinum. And it comes with a truly stunning salmon dial that – as often with salmon dials – is elegant, unostentatious but with that very special twist. The reference 5270P is powered by the handwound calibre CH 29-535 PS Q. It combines a perpetual calendar with the column-wheel chronograph calibre launched in 2009. The chronograph mechanism is connected to the timekeeping gear train by a horizontal clutch and features jumping minutes for enhanced legibility. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, it can store in between 55 to 65 hours of power reserve. The Gyromax balan
